A former Sydney police officer blamed his PTSD for fuelling years long denigration of his girlfriend as he faced justice in court.

A former Sydney cop who unleashed years of “vitriolic” domestic violence on his ex-partner has avoided jail after arguing PTSD from work fuelled his abusive actions.

Jordan Leigh Weston, a court has heard, variously assaulted, stalked and denigrated his former girlfriend over the space of almost two-and-a-half years from mid-2021 to late 2023.

Among the most serious of his crimes was sending a tirade of text messages in which he told the woman, “I hope you get raped” and “f***ing get killed on the way to work”.

The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to offences including assault, intimidation, stalking and unlawfully accessing data on internal police systems – all part of his pattern of coercive and jealous behaviours.

On Monday he attempted to have his charges dismissed under mental health laws arguing his judgement was impaired by work-related PTSD, but a magistrate refused citing the “nature and seriousness of the offences and the period of time over which they occurred”.

Magistrate Bryan Robinson convicted the ex-Senior Constable at the NSW Police Transport Command and sentenced him to a two-year Community Corrections order after warning he came “very close to a sentence of imprisonment”.

“There was repeated offending,” he said. “The courts must act to protect victims.

“There is just too much domestic violence, the courts are just overrun by domestic violence.”

Despite the heavy rain beating down in Sydney’s southwest Weston donned sunglasses and a surgical mask as he left court on Monday, to hide his face from the media.

The court heard he had resigned from the police after spending the better part of a year suspended while his case moved through the courts.

Weston’s victim sat in the back of the court during the sentencing, while the former police officer’s mother, father, brother and sister-in-law came to support him.

Prosecutor Sally Stuart had argued Weston should face criminal punishment, saying the prospect of him escaping without a conviction would be “the wrong outcome”.

“There will be … no denunciation, no recognition of the harm done to (the victim).”

Agreed facts tendered to the court reveal Weston sent vile texts to the woman on May 17, 2021 including “I hope your next period you bleed to f***ing death feminist f***ing slut”, “I’m going to make your life a misery” and “You are going to pay … and suffer”.

When he returned home from work that evening he pushed the woman against a wall, then onto a lounge before hitting her on the head, the documents state.

Magistrate Robinson said of this incident: “what was said and what was threatened … was a serious example of an offence of intimidation”.

Ms Stuart said the Mount Vernon man was responsible for a pattern of domestic violence, jealousy and “vitriolic” behaviours designed to coercively control his ex-partner.

She submitted Weston’s PTSD and mental health issues did not mean he was unable to control his own actions, which she described as “serious examples of domestic violence”.

“This is not a case where he was overcome by his condition … (the behaviours) were persistent and controlled for approximately two and a half years”.

She said the messages he sent on May 17, 2021 – while on shift at Liverpool police station – were “vitriolic, horrible, offensive abusive messages” that ended “in a very violent attack and assault”.

The fact sheets showed Weston also repeatedly accessed the police database COPS to look up details about his then-partner, her friends and former lovers.

After they had broken up in June 2023 Weston would park near the woman’s home to “be close to her”, the documents state, causing the victim to feel “afraid”.

“I love you, but afraid of you,” she later wrote to him.

Weston later threatened to “bury” the woman after learning she had taken screenshots of his abusive texts, saying as a police officer he knew the system and that she would be “screwed”.

Barrister Phillip Butterfield, acting for Weston, said his client was remorseful and had paid the price by resigning from the police force and experiencing public embarrassment in the media.

Weston was undergoing treatment from a psychiatrist and was set to join a Catholic behavioural program, Mr Butterfield said.

“There’s a fair body of work that he’s addressing these matters,” he said.

Mr Butterfield had earlier argued Weston “disassociated himself” with these violent and abusive patterns and was at times “lost in his own world”.

He now admitted his guilt after being stuck in a “cycle of paranoia” during the offending period.

“We’re not dealing with a person who is a denier,” the barrister said. “He has accepted his responsibility.”

The former cop had previously been a “very diligent” officer before his offending, the court was told. He expects to be able to find work easily with his CV, the court was told.

Magistrate Robinson ordered Weston to continue treatment as directed by community corrections throughout the period of the release order.
