A man will remain behind bars on remand for nearly two months after he was charged with stabbing an elderly man on the street, leaving him fighting for his life.

Emergency services were called to Lyons Rd at Five Dock, in Sydney’s inner west, shortly before 4pm on Sunday after reports of a stabbing.

Police were told an 82-year-old man had been stabbed in the abdomen by a 51-year-old man on the street.

The younger man reportedly then fled the scene, as witnesses assisted the elderly man until paramedics arrived.

The older man was treated at the scene before being rushed to the Royal Prince Alfred hospital in a critical condition.

NSW Police said in a statement that initial investigations led officers to believe that the two men were known to each other.

Following a wide-scale search, police located and arrested Michael Purdue, 51, at Pyrmont shortly after 6pm.

He was taken to Day Street police station and has since been charged with cause wounding or grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder.

He faced Parramatta Local Court on Monday, where he did not apply for bail.

Mr Purdue will remain in custody on remand until he returns to court in late January.

Police earlier established a crime scene and were looking to speak with a man who they said may assist with their inquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information is urged to contact local police or Crime Stoppers.
