Sex offender has jail time slashed because of risk of Covid in prison
Trevor Dunmall, 58, was found guilty of multiple charges, including two of sexually penetrating a person under the age of 12.
A sex offender who abused two young children has had his sentence reduced because of the risk of contracting Covid behind bars.
Trevor Dunmall, 58, was found guilty of multiple charges, including two of sexually penetrating a person under the age of 12, 9 News reported.
Dunmall, a disabled man from Melbourne, abused the two children over a period of two years, starting in 2015.
His victims did not come forward until they were older and Dunmall has repeatedly insisted he is innocent.
Justice Felicity Hampel decided to reduce his prison sentence because he is diabetic and at high risk of becoming unwell if he catches Covid.
“Imprisonment in a time of Covid is more onerous and a sentence must be reduced as a result of that,” Ms Hampel told the County Court.
“There’s also the fear of being exposed to Covid in an environment where you no longer have control over who you see and when you see them.”
Dunmall was jailed for eight-and-a-half years, but will be eligible for parole in five-and-a-half years.
