Hundreds march in Sydney to raise awareness for DV victims
Hundreds of people have marched in rallies across the country to mourn lives lost to alleged domestic violence.
Hundreds of people have marched through Sydney’s CBD as part of a nationwide rally to mourn the lives of women and children killed by men in alleged domestic violence.
Marchers gathered in Hyde Park from 6.30pm on Saturday for the Remember Their Names rally, a nationwide event organised by the National Rally Collective.
Organisers said the gatherings were aimed to give space for the community to “reflect, heal, and mourn together”, and to raise awareness to the lives lost to alleged domestic violence.
“We are at 80 women that have been killed to predominantly men’s violence in Australia,” organisers said.
“People all across the world are hurting, angry, and feeling hopeless.
“We want to install some hope back into everyone by coming together to remember their names.”
Marchers were encouraged to bring flowers and fake candles, which were placed in the lawn at Hyde Park.
Organisers said a flower and candle would be placed for each woman killed in alleged domestic violence.
Speakers included women’s health advocate Mia Findlay and We, Future Leaders CEO Darian Brooker.
Other rallies were expected to also take place on Saturday in Newcastle, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Canberra.
