Glamorous young drug mum risked jail with $200 cosmetic theft
A glamorous young drug trafficking mum risked returning to prison by stealing $200 of high-end cosmetics at the Mecca Cosmetica flagship Sydney store.
Glamorous young drug trafficking mum, Kathleen Day, risked returning to prison by stealing $200 of cosmetics from the Mecca Cosmetica flagship store in Sydney’s CBD.
The 22-year-old, who was previously convicted of dealing a commercial supply of cannabis which she delivered wrapped in Christmas paper inside a Woolies bag, shoplifted the high-end makeup in March.
She stole the items while on a community corrections sentence for four crimes of taking part in the commercial supply of cannabis, a total of 7.2kg of the drug, out of her Suzuki Swift.
Then the mother of a young baby, Day dropped off $72,000 of cannabis to a dealer’s home while texting her sister about “hiding in the bushes” while “there were heaps of cops around”.
Day committed the drug supply between October 2018 and January 2019 near her Albion Park home after her then partner and father of her baby lost his licence for driving while disqualified.
A NSW court sentenced her to a Community Corrections Order in lieu of a prison sentence and under which she was required to commit no further offences, or risk serious penalty.
Day’s lawyer Graeme Morrison told the Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday that his client had spent several months in prison after her drug arrest.
He said Day was “well aware of the serious nature of the breach” of her order while on conditional release.
Court documents seen by news.com.au reveal that Day, who currently resides in Albion Park, visited Mecca Cosmetica on the evening of March 8 this year.
At 6.07pm, she placed three MAC lip pencils into her coat pocket, then a MAC Studio Fix powder into her pocket “and unboxed it with one hand”.
Police facts tendered to the court said Day “then removed the empty box from the pocket and placed it back on display leaving the MAC powder in her pocket”.
Day then took an Urban Decay spray and placed it in her coat pocket.
She then went to the cash register and paid for two further items with an Apple Pay MasterCard, but left “making no attempt to pay” for the $200 of items inside her coat.
Magistrate Erin Kennedy acknowledged that Day was seeing a psychologist and was “in therapy” for a complex diagnosis of problems and had “removed herself from negative influences”.
According to police facts, Day transported up to four pounds of cannabis each time she delivered to an alleged dealer in Goulburn two to three years ago.
On February 24, 2019, Day texted her sister to say she was forced to hide from police during one of her drives.
“There was heaps of cops in Goulburn last night cause the academy graduated,” the text message said.
“Hiding in the bushes on the way home last night.”
Day was captured on CCTV footage behind the wheel of her Suzuki Swift in May 2019 while stopping at a service station before delivering four pounds to the alleged dealer.
She was arrested in June that year after a traffic stop by police in Albion Park.
She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to the CCO, which has expired since she reoffended in March by shoplifting, which breached the order.
Asked by Mr Morrison to consider a community service order for the breach, Magistrate Kennedy said that could not be enforced in the Covid-19 lockdown.
She told Day “because you have been having treatment and looking at rehabilitation” she would fine her $880.
“Let’s not see you back again,” Her Honour told Day.
