A prison source has revealed how disgraced former Australian television star and convicted child sex offender Robert Hughes spent his final weeks behind bars.

The 73-year-old, who played Martin Kelly on Hey Dad! from 1987 to 1993, was this week released after more than six years in custody for the sexual abuse of young girls, including Sarah Monahan who played his on-screen daughter Jenny.

According to a prison source, Hughes kept to himself and rarely associated with other people during his stint in prison.

“He would wrap his head in a scarf, put on a pair of sunnies and then put on a hat,” the source told The Daily Telegraph.

“He looked to be concealing his identity. He didn’t want anyone knowing who he was.”

Hughes left his cell at 7am each day and split his time up between walking around the prison yard alone or working in a recycling job.

With a weekly wage from the prison job, Hughes was able to purchase lollies, noodles, canned food or newspapers from a “buy ups” scheme operating at Sydney’s Long Bay prison.

His relatively peaceful existence at the facility contrasted sharply from his initial stint in Goulburn jail where he was pelted with milk cartons full of faeces.

After renouncing his Australian citizenship in 2019, Hughes was deported to the UK following his release from prison.

He will spend his twilight years in London with his supportive wife and agent to the stars Robyn Gardiner.

Hughes continues to deny any wrongdoing.

In a report handed down by the State Parole Authority before his release, it was revealed Hughes still blamed his victims for the situation he found himself in.
