Regional towns welcome lifting of domestic NSW travel restrictions

A Melbourne Centrelink office will close with just one day's notice, in what its local member has called "a savage attack on people in need".

The Centrelink Abbotsford office will close from Friday.

Government Services Minister Stuart Robert said Services Australia was unable to reach an agreement with the building's landlord or find an alternative site in the area, but local member and Greens leader Adam Bandt said that excuse was "simply not credible".

Earlier, WA Premier Mark McGowan hit out at NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian today as he and Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk faced criticism about keeping borders closed.

Deputy Chief Health Officer Paul Kelly said Wednesday afternoon he couldn't see any medical reason for borders to stay closed.

But he stressed the decision to open borders remained with the states and territories who made the decisions to close them in the first place.

He made the comments at a press conference in Canberra this afternoon, where he announced Australia now has 650 active cases.

45 people are in hospital and nine of them are in intensive care, with seven on ventilators.

It comes after a Melbourne school was forced to close after an onsite construction worker tested positive for COVID-19.

The ADCO subcontractor was employed for renovations at St Leonard's College in Brighton, in the city's south-east, and was tested last week.

The construction site has been closed temporarily while sanitisation is complete, and works are expected to recommence tomorrow.

Australia has recorded 7079 cases of COVID-19 so far with 100 deaths. Cases include 3082 in New South Wales, 1580 in Victoria, 1058 in Queensland, 439 in South Australia, 557 in Western Australia, 226 in Tasmania, 107 in the Australian Capital Territory and 30 in the Northern Territory.
