Police and paramedics were called to the training studio responding to reports a performer was unconscious and not breathing.

Police say the mishap caused the man to fall heavily, hitting his neck on a metal platform.

Witnesses began CPR on the teenager, who is believed to have been in full costume at the time, before paramedics arrive on scene.

He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition, police advised.

A crime scene has been set up at the training studio and police have interviewed witnesses in relation to the incident.

The Chinese Youth League trains performers in traditional Chinese dance, including ‘lion dancing’, in “a safe and encouraging environment”, according to its website.

The Chinese Youth League has been contacted for comment.
