Qld election 2020: ‘He wants a Premier who will do what he says’: Deputy premier Steven Miles hits back at PM
The deputy premier has delivered a scathing slap back to Morrison, accusing him of deserting his post to campaign in Queensland.
Queensland deputy premier Steven Miles has been a willing thorn in the side of the Federal Government, regularly picking fights with the Prime Minister and other Liberal rivals in NSW.
And during his press conference alongside Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Monday morning, he once again took aim at Scott Morrison.
Mr Miles said the Prime Minister had launched an “extraordinary attack” on him.
“He said I should stick to my day job, well this is my day job — delivering more and better health services for Queenslanders,” said the deputy premier who also serves as the state’s Health Minister.
“This is from a bloke who has taken a whole week off leading our country to prop up his party here in Queensland in a state election campaign all because he wants to elect a premier who will just do what he says.”
On Sunday, Mr Morrison said of Mr Miles: “I think this guy’s got to grow up, I really think he does. I think those sort of juvenile remarks reflect terribly on him.”
It followed Mr Miles saying: “The Prime Minister is personally running the LNP’s campaign here in Queensland ... he is not a candidate in this election."
Meanwhile, the preference deals continue to break down after it was revealed Labor is threatening to tear up its longstanding deal with the Greens after a senior figure referenced the term "fugly slut" in a social media post about former deputy premier Jackie Trad.

Palaszczuk can’t guarantee Jackie Trad won’t be back: Opposition
Earlier today, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk emphatically ruled out her controversial former deputy returning to the Cabinet if Labor retains power in the Queensland state election.
Ms Trad herself also released a statement assuring voters she wouldn't be seeking a return.
But the opposition has said this is a promise the Premier can't keep, alluding to the power of the left faction Ms Trad occupies.
“Annastacia Palaszczuk can’t guarantee that Jackie Trad won’t be back in the Cabinet again because the choice is not up to her," Manager of Opposition Business Jarrod Bleijie.
“Before the last election, Annastacia Palaszczuk guaranteed Curtis Pitt would remain as Treasurer, only to dump him for Jackie Trad after re-election.
“Labor’s factions choose the Cabinet appointments; the decision will be up to left faction and United Workers Union powerbroker Gary Bullock.
Record number of candidates nominate for election
The once in a lifetime global pandemic was already going to make this state election campaign an election like no other but it's now been revealed a record number of candidates will be vying for power in the Queensland parliament.
The likelihood of a hung parliament looms as it’s confirmed nearly all electorates will be fiercely contested by both the major parties and a number of the minor parties.
More independents and more smaller parties are out to get Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, with the Labor Party, Liberal-National Party and Greens to duke it out in 93 seats, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation will contest 90, Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party 55 and Katter’s Australia Party 13.
The Electoral Commission of Queensland says there will be a whopping 144 more candidates battling it out in the October 31 vote than in 2017.
“It’s exciting to see a record-breaking 12 registered political parties endorsing candidates, as well as a large cohort of non-endorsed candidates, all throwing their hat into the political ring to vie for the opportunity to represent their communities in State Parliament,” commissioner Pat Vidgeon said.
Palaszczuk Govt will build seven satellite hospitals
The cash splash for the health sector has continued at the start of the second week of the election campaign.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will invest $265 million for the creation of seven satellite hospitals across South East Queensland to help ease the pressure on emergency departments.
The initiative will also provide more hospital care closer to homes.
They will be located in Redlands, Brisbane Southside (near QEII Hospital), Pine Rivers (Petrie / Strathpine area), Gold Coast, Ipswich, Caboolture and Bribie Island.
The Labor Party is promising to spend nearly $900 million on new health infrastructure projects.
“These new Satellite Hospitals will also help provide the healthcare services families need in our rapidly growing outer-urban areas," Ms Palaszczuk said.
“This initiative is an important part of our ongoing Economic Recovery Plan and will support up to 768 local jobs during construction.”
LNP's $300m surgery blitz
Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington has vowed to splash $300 million on a surgery blitz to clear the backlog of patients waiting to go under the knife.
She says the cash injection will fast-track operations for nearly 56,000 Queenslanders needing treatment.
This is in addition to the party's pledge to invest $1.3 billion to recruit nearly 4500 nurses, doctors, paramedics and allied health workers, the LNP leader said.
“The surgery waiting list has grown by almost 26,000 patients in just five years under Labor," she said.
“Every day Queenslanders are waiting is another day of worry, pain or financial hardship from not working.
“People get sicker on the waiting list and often can become dependent on painkillers as well.
“Our plan will undo the damage Labor has done to the health system over the last five years.”
Palaszczuk favourite with the bookies
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is favourite with the bookies to claim victory in the Queensland state election later this month.
Betting agency Ladbrokes is offering odds of $1.67 for Labor to be the next sworn in government in the Sunshine State.
Deb Frecklington's Liberal-National Party is paying $2.15 and Pauline Hanson's One Nation is right back at $67.
Palaszczuk says Jackie Trad won't be back in Cabinet
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has revealed her controversial former deputy Jackie Trad will not be rejoining the Cabinet if Labor is victorious on October 31.
"She will not be returning to Cabinet," the state leader confirmed to reporters this morning.
Analysis from The Courier Mail's Steven Wardill said the Ms Trad would wield her power as a prominent broker in the party's left faction to muscle her way back into a ministerial position despite being deeply unpopular among voters.
In a Facebook post this morning, Ms Trad categorically ruled this out, saying "I am not seeking a return to Cabinet".
And this was confirmed by the premier shortly after.
Miles slams PM's 'extraordinary attack'
Steven Miles has hit back at the Prime Minister after Scott Morrison told the deputy premier to focus on his day job.
"This is my day job," Miles, who is also Queensland's Health Minister, said.
Mr Miles said it was the Prime Minister who had left his post as the country's leader during a pandemic to campaign with his colleague and Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington.
Queensland records another day of zero new cases
Queensland has recorded another day of zero new coronavirus cases, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed this morning.
The Sunshine State currently has just four active cases.
Protesters cover PM's car in red paint
Not everyone is happy to see Scott Morrison in the Sunshine State as refugee protesters covered the Prime Minister's car in red paint this morning in Brisbane.
Mr Morrison had to be escorted from the University of Queensland during a visit to the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology.
A couple of protesters yelled and chased him to the car, shouting at him to “free, free the refugees.”
