Police should be sacked: car crash mother
POLICE shouldn't think it's acceptable to leave injured children by the side of the road, the mother of a car crash victim says.
TWO police officers who left the scene after witnessing a carload of five boys crash into a tree should be fired, the mother of one of the boys says.
A 12-year-old was being followed by police as he drove a stolen car when he panicked and lost control on a dirt road near Alice Springs about 2am on May 12, hitting a tree at high speed and rolling three times.
He broke his foot and his four passengers, aged 10, 11, 13 and 15 were all injured, one with a broken collarbone.
An internal police investigation has led to a 40-year-old constable being charged with failing to rescue, failing to stop after a crash, and failing to render assistance.
A 20-year-old probationary constable was also charged with making a false statutory declaration.
The driver's mother on Friday sent a letter to the NT's chief minister, the attorney-general, the NT commissioner and assistant commissioner of police, and the Alice Springs mayor, calling for the two officers, who have been suspended from duty, to be permanently dismissed "in the public interest".
"My son could have been dead in that front seat, I saw the vehicle wreckage; I nearly had a heart attack," the driver's mother told AAP.
Police told AAP the officers did not use lights or sirens as they followed the boys, and said it was not a pursuit, but they declined to explain how they were attempting to engage the car.
Keeping the two officers in the force sent a terrible message to the community, the mother said.
She also expects to have an in-person meeting with NT Police Commissioner John McRoberts.
AAP has contacted all recipients of the letter.
The offices of the chief minister and the attorney-general confirmed the letter had been received but would not comment on the matter as it is now before the courts.
The senior constable is due to appear at the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on June 5.
Charges have not yet been laid against the boys.
