More than 100 firefighters tackle massive bushfire, one home destroyed
At least one home has been destroyed and more than 150 properties are without power as a bushfire rages in WA.
A house has been destroyed and more than 150 homes and businesses are without power as a large bushfire burns south of Perth.
As of Sunday afternoon, 113 firefighters were on the ground near Donnybrook, in Western Australia’s South West region.
The fire has burned through 5895ha of land and has been the subject of periodic emergency bushfire alerts since it broke out on Tuesday morning after being sparked by lightning on Monday night.
The fire was stationary and contained but it was yet to be brought under control as of Sunday afternoon.
The latest emergency alert was issued on Sunday morning before it was downgraded again to watch and act status, meaning there is still a possible threat to lives and homes.
At least one property has been destroyed, with specialist emergency services personnel on the ground on Sunday assessing further damage.
The aerial firefighting support unit, which has been used throughout at the week, was on standby on Sunday afternoon in case of a flare up.
Those on the ground continue strengthening containment lines and mopping up.
Fire brigades from across the South West have been asked to send all available personnel and appliances to help.
About 155 homes and businesses in the Donnybrook-Balingup and Collie shires remain without power due to the blaze.
An evacuation centre at the Donnybrook Recreation Centre remains open.
