Man suffers leg injury after police shooting outside of local shops
A man has been shot and tasered “simultaneously” by police outside a Sydney shopping centre, after reports of women being assaulted with a knife.
A man has been shot in the leg during an altercation with police in dramatic scenes outside a Sydney Woolworths.
Officers were called to Bunnerong Road in Matraville just before 4.30pm on Wednesday to reports a man was armed with a knife and assaulting two women.
Officers chased the 27-year-old into an underground car park at the Matraville Woolworths, where he then was seen to allegedly produce “a large knife, and turned and challenged police” according to Acting Assistant Commissioner Martin Fileman.
One officer then discharged a taser while another shot off a firearm “simultaneously” according to Mr Fileman.
He went on to say that his “thoughts” were with the man and the officers involved.
“It’s extremely terrifying when incidents like this unfold for everyone involved,” he said.
“It’s an extremely dangerous and serious situation where police don’t know what’s going to happen.
“As we saw today, it can turn on a dime – it can change very quickly.”
The man was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound to his hip before he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.
Three ambulance crews and four police cars were called to the scene, according to 2GB.
The circumstances surrounding the incident and the discharge of a firearm will now be investigated and subject to an independent review.
