Following the death of a 27-year-old Sydney man who had Covid-19, an Australian physician has revealed a chilling statistic about young Aussies getting the Delta variant of the virus.
Covid expert Dr Norman Swan said the tragic death of Aude Alaskar should be a warning for everyone - especially younger Australians - to get vaccinated.
Appearing on Channel 10's The Project, Dr Swan said the Delta variant was far more likely to infect younger Australians that ever before.
"This virus is almost certainly more virulent, in other words more likely to cause disease and it is spreading into younger people," he said on Wednesday evening.
"There are younger people in intensive care and on ventilators in New South Wales. It's a dangerous virus for younger people.
"There is a one in 30,000 risk of a clotting syndrome with AstraZeneca, a one in 50 chance of ending up in ICU if you got infected. These are the variable."
Meanwhile, Queensland police are on the hunt for a women who has allegedly fled hotel quarantine on the Gold Coast.
It is understood the woman fled the hotel overnight, after she was directed to isolate at the Sofitel Hotel in Broadbeach from August 2.
"Police are investigating after a 24-year-old woman, who was directed to isolate at a Gold Coast quarantine hotel for 14 days on August 2, escaped from the premises by forcing access through a glass door overnight," the statement read.
"She remains outstanding and police are currently conducting extensive searches in an effort to locate her as soon as possible."
Queensland recorded 17 new cases today - 16 linked to the Indooroopilly cluster and one a reef pilot from Cairns. NSW recorded 233 cases of Covid-19 to 8pm on Tuesday.
