The driver who allegedly ran down Sam Kerr’s nan with his car caused chaotic scenes when he returned to the Fremantle Magistrates Court to face a dangerous driving charge.

Coral Kerr, 89, was seriously injured when a driver mounted a curb and hit the great grandmother as she got off a bus at Palmyra, in Perth’s south, on December 27.

Ms Kerr suffered several broken bones and required surgery following the incident.

The alleged driver Mark John Britt, 63, appeared in court on Tuesday charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

He caused a stir as he entered the courtroom and was asked to be quiet by court officers as he made his way to the bar.

Mr Britt was represented by a Legal Aid lawyer but complained another lawyer who was appointed to his case was overseas.
The accused said he wanted to see high profile Perth barrister John Hammond but he wasn’t on the list, as he appeared before the magistrate.

“My proper lawyer is overseas,” he said in court.

“I asked for John Hammond, but he isn’t on the list.

“I don’t want to lose my house.”

The magistrate adjourned the matter for six weeks so Mr Britt could seek further legal advice before he enters a plea.

Security escorted Mr Britt to the side of the courtroom and was asked to be quiet while he waited for court documents.

The matter was adjourned to next month.
