Darwin bombing survivor remembers attacks

ON the eve of the 74th anniversary of the Japanese bombing of Darwin, 93-year-old survivor Basil Stahl shares his memories of that day.

TEENAGER Basil Stahl was sitting on the sandbagged side of a slit trench having a morning cup of tea when the first bombs fell on Darwin.

IT was just before 10am on February 19, 1942, and when his surveying unit heard plane engines overhead they cheered, mistakenly believing they were British reinforcements until they glimpsed the Rising Sun insignia and leapt into their trenches.
