Melbourne says it made the right call to part with pick 2 after snaring Chris Salem

MELBOURNE says its ability to snare Christian Salem justifies the bold call to give up the draft's second selection.

MELBOURNE says its ability to snare left-footer Christian Salem on Thursday night justifies the bold call to give up the draft's second selection.

Demons coach Paul Roos said yesterday Victorian onballer Salem and former GWS midfielder Dom Tyson had to be considered a package, despite passing up silky midfielder Josh Kelly.

Salem was taken at pick ten, after the Demons traded their pick two for ready-made former no. 3 draft selection Tyson.

The club has successfully transformed its midfield in recent weeks, adding six new midfielders and having confidence Jack Viney and Jimmy Toumpas will both flourish next year.

The Demons were annihilated by rivals in the midfield this year, but their onball brigade will barely be recognisable next year under Paul Roos.

"We think Josh will be a good player and whoever was taken at pick two will be good, but there was a bit of conjecture,'' Roos said.

News_Rich_Media: The annual AFL draft in the most part went off as expected last night with just a couple of surprize picks thrown in for good measure - to take us through a few of the big winners from last night we're joined by the Herald Sun's Jon Ralph.

"We didn't think those top four picks were as clear-cut as some believed. We had a different list. We effectively got two players for one. Kelly is a good young kid, but for us to come out with Tyson and Salem is a really good result.

"He compliments Dom. We knew if we were getting Dom and Daniel Cross and Bernie Vince, we were able to go to the draft with speed in mind.

"The football world knew we needed to improve our midfield, and to be able to pull some triggers through the trade with (list manager) Todd Viney and (recruiter) Jason Taylor and then pick up some speed (in the draft) is great."

Roos also hopes to improve his footballers as human beings, one of the reasons the entire list will take part in Monday's Walk Against Family Violence from Federation Square.

"It is something I have been involved in through a family friend and I am really proud to be part of it and to get the word. There is no question our footballers are in more of a bubble and can be shielded, so it is important to expose them to these kind of causes to get them some education."

Roos said Tyson was back running after recovering from a hamstring injury and would take part in training on Monday week.

Chris Dawes will filter back into training after Christmas after battling knee soreness.

With Bernie Vince, Viv Michie, Cross, Tyson, Salem and Brighton Grammar draftee Jayden Hunt, the Demons finally have some midfield depth to add to Jack Trengove, Nathan Jones, Matt Jones and Viney.
