Warning issued for viral Stanley drink bottle
The Stanley drink bottle has taken the world by storm. Now those who have managed to score one are being warned of its hidden dangers.
A warning has been issued for people who own the Stanley drink bottle with concerns it could be harming everything from your teeth to your skin.
The Stanley cup, the super-sized stainless steel insulated mug, has become a viral sensation.
Models have described them on TikTok as the “best cup ever”, while Gen Z nurses say they can’t leave home without them, and even mothers have shown themselves offering them to their babies.
One woman in a TikTok video that her baby would “only drink” out of a Stanley cup.
Another joked: “Had to get him his own so he’d stop stealing mine.”
The hashtag #Stanleycup can be seen more than 7.2 billion times on TikTok.
However, some dentists and doctors have started to issue warnings about the drinking vessel.
Dr Sachin Soni, owner of Lady Bay Dental Care in Nottingham, northwest of London, warned that drinking from a straw could be detrimental to young teeth.
“If a mum or dad came and asked if it was okay or not, I would say to try and avoid with young children as it may adversely affect tooth position and the growth of the developing jaw,” he told Daily Mail.
“Children using a straw too often can sometimes cause changes in tooth position while the jaw is still developing.”
Another doctor said the cups could actually be “ruining your skin”.
Dr Chisom Ikeji explained on Instagram that “sucking on a straw all day has the potential to cause premature wrinkles around your mouth”.
“Just like any repetitive muscle motion in your face can cause wrinkles using a straw constantly to suck can also cause wrinkles,” she said.
In a TikTok video Dr Ikeji expanded on her concerns comparing drinking out of a Stanley cup all day to smoking.
Commonly known as “smoker’s lines”, the thin vertical wrinkles form over time as smokers overuse muscles around the mouth.
Dr Ikeji described the Stanley cup movement as “very similar” to smoking but added it was “maybe not to the same extent” as inhaling a cigarette.
“So, listen to this message and stop using your straw water bottle constantly,” she said.
The Stanley cup is the brainchild of the drinkware company Stanley 1913.
Analysts attribute a large part of the product’s recent success to the company’s president, Terence Reilly, who was appointed back in 2020, having previously been chief marketing officer for Crocs footwear.
