‘The best DIY’: Woman’s $19 Kmart hack is a spot-on dupe for $200 item

TikTok creator does simple DIY hack on a Kmart ottoman to make a gorgeous furniture piece.
The millennial pink or dusty purple pseudo-mid-century-modern ottoman with its fabric cover isn’t everyone’s taste, but that never stopped a DIY-er.
Mums have followed a tutorial by TikTok creator Simonette to completely reinvent Kmart’s Ribbed Storage Ottoman with its microsuede cushioned lid.
The DIY is simple. It just requires a pair of scissors, some paint and a couple of hours.
Sometimes DIYs are high stakes because you’ve spent a lot of time and money on the project. But you can definitely afford to mess this one up.
The ottoman is only $19 on sale and you probably have the scissors in your kitchen drawer. The piece is small enough that a sample tin of paint from Bunnings should be plenty to do a couple of coats.

Kmart ottoman simple DIY hack
Simonette shared her quick, easy hack on TikTok and since then people have been doing their own versions, adding marble tops and sharing on social media.
“Just cut off the cushion and there’s wood underneath,” she said in her video.
“Paint, paint, paint, any colour you like. I made two as I wanted them as bedside tables.”
She clarified the process in the comments.
“I went directly over the wood, but I used a specific paint that is a primer and paint in one.
“The top part is still removable and you can store stuff in there,” she added.
Styled as a bedside table, the Kmart piece is totally transformed into something quite sophisticated.

Mum shocked at how well her Bunnings-Kmart DIY turns out
Simonette was pretty confident painting her ottoman would look good, but not all DIY projects start out looking like they’ll be a success.
Perth mum Maddison Black was eyeing up a $1300 designer stone coffee table when she thought she’d take a crack at making her own.
Using a Kmart coffee table painted white, plus stone mosaic tiles from Bunnings, Maddison began her project.
At first, it wasn’t good. “It was looking like it was part of Fred Flintstone's house,” the TikTokker told news.com.au.
“But I really wanted a stone table and I remember seeing meshed stones from Bunnings,” she said.
“I wasn’t sure it was going to work because when I started applying it to the table, it just wasn’t working.”
But she stuck with it, angling the tiles for a more organic look. The result was gorgeous.
"Absolutely stunning,” wrote one follower.
“Wow amazing,” a second person said.
