Woman’s Kmart race day dress hack goes viral

WHEN Brenda posted her Kmart hack on Facebook before bed, she had no idea how many would respond overnight.

WHEN Brenda Trimboli posted a picture of her latest fashion hack on the Kmart Mums Australia Facebook page before bed, she had no idea that when she woke up 19,000 people would have responded.

Trimboli, from Adelaide, was struggling to find a dress she liked for this year’s Melbourne Cup Day celebrations.

“I couldn’t find anything I liked and I didn’t want to spend a fortune,” she explains to news.com.au.

“I saw this dress at my local Kmart and loved the colour, but it was a bit too short for me. So I took two dresses into the change room and tried one on and then flipped the other one upside down and stepped into it with the frill on the bottom. That’s when the idea popped into my head to make it into a matching skirt.”

So she purchased two of the $25 dresses and took them to a friend who does alterations.

“Basically one dress was cut just below the waist and then hemmed. This dress becomes the top.

The second dress was cut underneath the arms and the frill was then reattached to make ruffle at the bottom of the skirt. A waistband was added and a zip, so it all came together very easily.”

Trimboli is a member of the Kmart Mums Australia Facebook page, where fans of the department store share their favourite items and tips and tricks.

She had no idea that people would love her hack so much. Her post currently has 19,000 likes and has been met with a slew of supportive comments.

“This was my very first post to the Kmart Mums Facebook page so I had no idea what to expect.

“My daughter took the photo and I posted it late at night and went to bed shortly after. When I woke the next morning, I was completely shocked and surprised to see the amount of comments and likes. Everyone has been so supportive and kind.”

It’s not the first time Trimboli has put her own spin on Kmart fashion.

“This is the third time I have done a hack on a Kmart dress. The last one I did, was a white dress made out of two Kmart skirts which required no sewing at all. I wore it to a wedding and got lots of compliments but nobody knew it was from Kmart.”

“It’s hard to find dresses in boutiques that fit my shape and my budget, so my creativeness is born out of necessity.”
