HATS or fascinators? Cocktail or maxis? Double breasted or slim fit?

Every year the tried and tested formula for spring racing fashion changes ever so slightly, keeping us all guessing as to what will be the trackside trends de jour.

So before you rush out and splash some cash on a new outfit, here's some tips from Westfield Stylist, Ken Thompson, to help both fellas and fillies to look their finest this spring racing season.

Women:

  1. Fascinators should complement the dress – if it’s not a perfect colour match look for a fascinator with just the right references to like colours, texture or shapes to your dress.

  2. Opt for cocktail length over a floor-length dress – it’s hard enough to keep your balance on the grass without battling with a longer hem line!

  3. This season it’s all about the low, sleek ponytail – it’s a simple, glamorous look that can be easily styled to accommodate a fascinator or hat.

  4. Co-ordinate your shoes and accessories subtly. Instead of sporting one block colour head-to-toe, look for imperfect matches in colours and texture when selecting your shoes and handbag.

  5. Steer clear of ponchos - there is nothing worse for the environment or to the eyes than a plastic raincoat.

Men:

  1. Double breasted suits are a classy option for any race day look. It’s a common misconception that men need to be extremely tall to pull off the double breasted suit – not true!

  2. We’re also going to see a return to pin stripes in grey and navy hues this racing season. It’s a modern look that brings life to a trend that’s usually reserved for the office.

  3. A tie is a must – look for really simple, silk woven ties for a classic, dapper look. Bow-ties, open collar shirts, and t-shirts are not appropriate for a day spent track-side.

  4. The male equivalent to the fascinator is a classic trilby or straw hat. Be warned, this is a tricky trend for any guy to nail and you can end up looking like a cartoon character if you pick the wrong one.

  5. Don't forget a pair of sunglasses - for men, you can’t go past a classic pair of Ray Bans or Persol sunglasses.
