Emma Freedman reveals top style tips for the Spring Carnival

EMMA Freedman’s father is a five-time Melbourne Cup-winning trainer, and she knows a thing or two about racing style. She reveals this season’s trends.

How to pick a winning horse

AS THE daughter of five-time Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Lee Freedman, media personality Emma Freedman knows a thing or two about racing.

The TV and Triple M radio name unveiled her top style tips that should help racegoers get through the Spring Racing Carnival, officially kicking-off with Derby Day on Saturday.

So, here is the trackside gospel according to Emma Freedman (who also happens to be the ambassador for Australian fashion label Rebecca Vallance):

1. Millinery is a must for all the race days. This year I am wearing hats for two days of the carnival, and a gorgeous floral piece on Oaks Day. Where else do you get to where a hat!? While the pretty minimalist bands are gorgeous, nothing beats being bold, sophisticated and incredibly chic with a larger piece of millinery. Don’t be scared!

2. There has been a definite resurgence in ruffle dresses, whether it be the whole dress or just parts of it, such as a sleeve or a hem

3. Lace frocks are always a popular option too. I think lace is a wonderful option as it is feminine, delicate and has a formal touch to it

4. Splashes of metallic tied into your race day outfit always makes for a bit of fun and adds a modern edge. On Derby Day I included a little metallic into my ensemble!

5. If you choose to wear a coloured dress I suggest something that makes a statement. For example, Australian designer Rebecca Vallance has created the most stunning zest colour that I am obsessing over — especially for Cup Day.

6. A matching top and skirt can be a wonderful option too. I think a lot of girls opt for a twin-set because it is versatile and is easily worn thereafter. Longer hemlines match this trend too.

7. Statement earrings are making a comeback in a big way. I love a bold earing with an off the shoulder dress. Very chic.

8. As a seasoned racegoer, I have learnt the hard way about heels! When scouting out the perfect shoe, always take into consideration that you will be standing for most of the day. Luckily the block heel is in vogue at the moment, a saviour to women everywhere. Also shoes with two straps help with comfort.

Natural brows, bronze eyes and peachy lips are in vogue.

9. When it comes to beauty, natural looking colours and styles are easiest to maintain and are always elegant. I’ve been seeing lots of bushy brows, bronze eyes and peachy lips. Hair up is also so beautiful and functional. Try a full voluminous ponytail

10. Fun sunglasses are fab too. If you are outside and it’s sunny, you may as well have fun with your eyewear.
