ALEX Perry drew gasps and giggles when he used his trademark honesty to tell women at a glamour racing fashion lunch today that flimsy homemade fascinators were an absolute no-no this spring Racing Carnival.
The colourful designer, renowned for shooting from the hip on the world fashion and modelling, told gathered guests at the annual Myer Spring Fashion Lunch at Flemington that they needed to make more effort with their racing headwear.
“If you’ve made something with a comb from Spotlight, it’s just not right,” he said.
He was equally critical of women who choose to wear plunging necklines and short skirts.
“Flex that fashion muscle if you have to at the disco,” he said.
There were plenty of racing appropriate fashions on show at the lunch hosted by Channel Seven’s Samantha Armytage and Mark Beretta.
Pastels, floral prints, lace and ladylike silhouettes featured in the parade by Myer’s stable of Australian designers.
Blue in all shades from baby to bold will be popular this season, along with strategically placed cutouts in dresses and tops.
Myer ambassador Kris Smith sported the latest looks for the blokes, with blue being a safe but on-trend option teamed with pops of bolder colour.
Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador and accomplished eventer, Rebeccah Panozza, debuted in her official role to talk through the hottest racewear trends by Myer.
“Pastels and white on white are some of my favourite trends for spring racing,” she says.
“Then throw on some millinery and you go from feeling great to feeling fabulous.”
Milliner Melissa Jackson says hats will be more popular this year over the ubiquitous fascinator.
“If you’re going to make it small, make it substantial,” she says.
“Netting will also be popular, it adds mystery and is a great concealer.”
