‘Unforgivable’: Aussie bride’s shock as best friend ditches wedding
A Melbourne bride-to-be has “blown up” after her best friend revealed on the radio she was ditching her wedding – and she’s not the only one.
An Australian bride has “blown up” after her best friend admitted she was bailing on her bridesmaid duties to attend a Taylor Swift concert.
Bridesmaid Olivia broke down in tears after telling the bride-to-be Jessie she wanted to leave the wedding early in order to see her idol at the MCG on February 17.
After enlisting the help of Fox 101.9’s Fifi, Fev & Nick Show, Olivia’s ambition to attend both the nuptials and the highly anticipated Eras Tour were quickly dashed.
“Obviously, like, the whole Taylor thing… we’ve been talking about it, and you’ve been saying how annoying it is that people are backing out,” Olivia began, somewhat awkwardly, in a clip shared by the radio hosts on TikTok.
“But, obviously, I haven’t told you that I got tickets for the Saturday… and this was done before Christmas.”
Olivia went on to offer a solution to the conundrum, which had caused other guests to pull out of Jessie’s big day altogether, stating say she was “trying to compromise and make it work” by attending the wedding during the day before jumping in her car and driving from the Yarra Valley to make it back to Melbourne for the show.
But the bride quickly saw red, asking Olivia if she was “joking” as her wedding was just a few weeks out.
“Is this, is this a prank? Are you joking? Liv, are you joking?” Jessie said.
Undeterred, Olivia told Jessie that she’s “loved Taylor for so long”, adding she knew how hard it was to get tickets.
“But you’ve known this since before December and it’s three weeks until my wedding, and you’re telling me now!?” Jessie said, audibly aghast.
“So, you want to miss a part of my wedding to go to a Taylor Swift concert?
“You know how much this has been annoying me that people have been dropping out to go to her and you’ve known all along that you’re going to go to her concert.”
Jessie’s anger causes Olivia to burst into tears, muffling through sobs: “I know I sound like such a bad friend.”
The hosts, who have been listening on in horror as the situation unfolded live on-air, then decide to interject in a bid to alleviate Olivia’s distress.
“People don’t want me to interrupt but I just feel like I should because it’s feeling quite personal,” Fifi Box interjects.
“This is your friendship. I know Olivia you were hoping this might play out better than it has.”
“She’s so angry at me. I feel awful, I’ve been meaning to tell you, Jessie,” the upset bridesmaid responded.
“I’ve been so anxious about it and I know how much this wedding means to you, and I’ve been there every step of the way and when we were trying on the bridesmaids’ dresses I was going to tell you but you just paid and I got nervous.”
The tears did nothing to pull Jessie back from her rage, with the bride stating she doesn’t “even understand” how she bought tickets “on my wedding date”.
“I’m not trying to be mean right now, I’m just angry before I get upset,” she explained.
“I’m so stressed, it’s three weeks out. I want you there next to me on my day and you’re not going to be there.”
While Olivia said she thought seeing Swift was a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity, social media users have been very quick to condemn the decision.
“That’s the most insane thing I’ve ever seen, can you fathom a bridesmaid of yours not going to your wedding to go and see Taylor Swift, who is touring all around the world... while you’re getting married which happens just once? I feel sick. She’s an awful person,” TikTok user @belleperez_ said in a video.
“The people who said they would ditch a friend’s wedding – what do you think Taylor Swift would do in that situation? I can’t imagine Taylor – the ultimate girls girl – would ever do this. I am devastated for the bride having to go through this,” another content creator, @alexaprinno, shared in a clip.
Many more labelled the actions “terrible” and “unforgivable”, stressing no friend should behave like this.
Others however were far more sympathetic to Olivia’s plight, stating she shouldn’t have to sacrifice her own dreams to make her mate’s come true.
“I’m sorry but I would have gone to see Taylor too,” one said.
“Friendships come and go. Eras Tour is once on a lifetime. I know what I would do,” another agreed.
