Acid attacks on women in India are common place and are deeply embedded in the history of the country’s “privileged patriarchal control over women and justified the use of violence” according to The Acid Survivors Foundation India.

The foundations’s survivor stories are littered with tales of unjust punishments for acid attackers such as Haseena Hussain from Bangalore whose former boss poured a full jar of sulfuric acid over her because she wouldn’t go back to work for him. She ended up with a hole in her head, loss of eyesight, dissolved lips, nose and earlobes and one side of her neck fused to her shoulder. He got five years jail and was fined around $A6000.
