Meghan Markle’s father will probably be given this bizarre gift ahead of the royal wedding
THERE are plenty of traditions royals need to follow prior to a royal wedding, and the latest is an unusual gift being given to Meghan Markle’s father.
BUYING a wedding gift for the father of the bride is one of the random tasks most people leave to the last minute because, well, you kind of forget it’s even a formality.
The royal family doesn’t have this problem. In line with every other aspect of royal life, there’s tradition to follow when it comes to giving a gift to the bride’s dad. And so, Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, can expect his very own coat of arms in the lead-up to the May 19 nuptials. Sure, it’s odd, but are you really that surprised?
Designed with custom colours and symbols, the traditional coat of arms is usually gifted just before the royal wedding — Kate Middleton’s father, Michael Middleton, received his around a week before her 2011 wedding.
Kensington Palace hasn’t confirmed that the coat of arms will definitely be the gift given to Thomas Markle, but given the royals follow tradition with everything else in their lives, it’s likely to be the present of choice.
The coat of arms given to Michael Middleton featured three acorns, each representing one of the family’s three children — Kate, Pippa and James — and a gold stripe across the middle for Carole Middleton.
A few years following the wedding, the royal couple usually receive their own “conjugal coat of arms”.
William and Kate’s was unveiled in 2013, two years after their 2011 wedding, and features the coat of arms given to William from the Queen for his 18th birthday next to the Middleton coat of arms.
Speculation was rife over whether or not Thomas Markle would be invited at all given Meghan’s two half-siblings weren’t invited.
However, The Sun has confirmed he has been invited with sources saying he is “overjoyed to be beside his little girl on the day she becomes a princess — even if he has to battle his demons to get there”.
And now, we know he has not only the wedding to look forward to but also his own coat of arms.
