‘Toxic’: 23yo reveals problem with modern dating

A young Aussie has taken to social media to share his bad date experience but how things turned around.

TikTok embraces 'short king' dating trend

A young Aussie has revealed why he is fed up with “superficial” dating in Australia right now.

Zac O’Brien, 23, is a professional martial arts fighter who recently returned from Thailand and has been checking out the Sydney dating scene.

The 23-year-old took to TikTok to tell the story of a blind datewhere sparks weren’t exactly flying.

Mr O’Brien said he knew the date wasn’t going well because it was so “awkward”, but things turned around when someone else gave him their number.

It was a real win and a change from how tough dating can be.

“Dating in general in 2024 is as hard as finding the right psychologist,” he told news.com.au.

He said that dating is “tricky” and social media makes it harder to find a genuine connection.

“Social media and the way technology is involving has created this really toxic kind of dating stigma,” he said.

Mr O’Brien said that dating now is “superficial” and trying to find “Gen Z love” isn’t easy.

“I wish I was born in the 90s,” he said.

He explained is tired of dating apps and the mindless nature of swiping and matching.

“I’d rather meet someone more naturally,” he admitted.

He explained that dating culture is now so online-based that approaching someone in public is seen as taboo.

“It is frowned upon. People think you look desperate,” he said.

“I’m a rare case. I have a weird type of confidence that I’m blessed with and I just don’t care.”

“What is the worst thing they are going say? ‘No’.”

Mr O’Brien also needs to focus on his health as he is suffering from heart problems.

“Yes. I’m going through health issues but it isn’t from chicks breaking my heart. It is a legitimate heart issue,” he said.

He said it is extra hard for him to meet someone he wants to have a relationship with because of the nature of his work.

“It is a selfish sport. Your whole life revolves around fighting, and you’re hungry, and you’re disciplined,” he said.

“It seems crazy to the general population.”

Mr O’Brien said his commitment to fighting has caused issues in past relationships because he is so dedicated to the sport.

Still if the right person came along, Mr O’Brien would be open to having a relationship.
