The disgusting comments Gen Z women face on dating apps

An Aussie woman who has used dating apps has revealed some of the offensive comments women face when talking to men.

What is modern dating?

Dating apps, social media and movements like #metoo appear to have revolutionised the world of dating — but is it really any different for Gen Z than it has been for generations past?

As part of our newsChat project with the Judith Nielson Institute — which supports and celebrates quality journalism and storytelling around the world — we asked Aussie Gen Zers from all walks of life how they feel about dating in the modern world.

“I have used Tinder, Bumble, Hinge on and off for quite a time — I’ve been single for about three years now,” says newsChat panellist, 24-year-old cis woman, Rachael Knowles.

“It is really hard to meet people organically. I love the idea it, and it’s exactly how I would like that to happen — but I think it’s really hard, particularly in Covid.”

With dating apps comes a wider variety of partners. Add to that the fact we’re no longer being expected to partner up and settle down in our early 20s and it equals a lot more freedom to design your romantic life around your own lifestyle and not the other way around.

However, it also opens up a whole new level of danger to the same old problems — especially as a woman.

“I’ve had situations of sexual assault via dating apps, so I’ve met some not great people and had some pretty bad experiences,” shared Rachael. “I’ve had to learn how to be safe online while dating … Tech facilitated abuse is huge”.

Have dating apps made romance better or worse for Gen Z?

While many Gen Z are choosing to focus on their studies, careers and friendships rather than finding ‘the one’, many (again, especially women) are still experiencing the same horrible real-world interactions as decades gone by — despite #metoo and a greater awareness of inappropriate behaviours.

“The slut-shaming [is still there],” explains Rachael. “Fat phobia is a huge one — I always get comments on my weight.”

“Groping is still very big — can confirm that’s still something that unfortunately happens. I think that’s probably why the online world [feels] a little bit easier.
