‘Secret dating trick’ singles use to hook up at supermarket

If you thought grocery shopping was innocent, think again. Singles, and those looking to swap partners, are using fruit to pick up lovers.

There’s plenty of things you can pick up at the supermarket these days – including an eligible partner apparently.

The trick to finding a single person who is ready to mingle while grabbing your groceries is a “secret dating code” that only those with their eyes on more than just their shopping lists know about.

Former Bachelor star Brittany Hockley shared the surprising hook-up technique after she discovered there are hidden meanings behind placing a bunch of bananas, a pineapple or a peach in your trolley if you’re single.

“You can go and pick up in a supermarket and there are all these secret signs and signals – depending on what you have in your trolley,” Brittany said on the Life Uncut podcast that she co-hosts with fellow Bachelor alum Laura Byrne.

“You have to get a trolley and you go to the fruit aisle. If you pick up a bunch of bananas, if they are upright, so the curves facing up in the top trolley, this means you are single.

“Now if you just want to buy bananas but you’re not looking, you turn them the other way down – so that means you are not open.”

Other signals – that Britt said people in the “singles club” use – include placing an “upside down” pineapple in your trolley.

“If you have a pineapple, upside down in your trolley, you are telling everybody that you are a swinger and you are open to swinging,” she explained.

But if you’re looking for a relationship, you need to grab a peach, revealing you place the fruit in the trolley of the person you’re interested in.

However, while the podcast host and recent author pointed out, there are issues with this “secret” dating trend.

“This is my question, what if he doesn’t have a bunch of bananas upright? What happens? You’re just throwing peaches out left, right and centre?” she joked.

Earlier this week Britt’s bestie Laura revealed the most “awkward” thing that has ever happened to her in the bedroom while appearing on news.com.au’s I’ve Got News For You podcast.

Before finding love with Matthew Johnson on the popular Channel 10 dating show, Laura was in a relationship that lasted six years, and her ex had an unusual fetish.

Laura – now a mum-of-two – revealed her former flame wanted to “have sex with all of me” – including her knee.

“My ex-boyfriend for many years … used to always say I want to have sex with all of you,” the 36-year-old told host Andrew Bucklow.

“And so he would try and have sex with the back of my knee. And at the time, I thought it was really flattering.”

Laura, who made the admission during a chat to promote her new book We Love Love with Britt, helpfully went on to explain how the sex act occurs.

“He would make me bend my knee and he would stick his penis behind the crease,” she said, surprising even Brittany.

“Yeah. Wow. That’s why one of your legs is ripped,” she joked.
