Fury as man labels Tinder date ‘entitled’ for not wanting to split bill

A man who labelled a woman “entitled” for not wanting to split bill has ignited a fierce debate about who should pay on a first date.

Tinder date's 'awkward' first date demand angers women

Who should pay on a first date?

It’s a topic that divides men and women around the world – which is why one man received a barrage of criticism for asking a girl he met on Tinder to split the bill on their first date.

The confused man from the US city of Miami was widely panned for sharing his request as women explained the array of reasons, namely the gender pay gap, why it shouldn’t be up to them to cover the cost of the date.

But many men, including this single guy who uses the handle @TheWaterBoy on TikTok, argued that in 2024 women who want equality should pay their own way.

In a video recording taken at the end of the date, “Water Boy” said the woman – who he had been talking to for a few days before they went out for food – was “mad she had to split the bill”.

“I don’t even know her and she doesn’t want to split the bill? After SHE ordered an appetiser that I didn’t want! THIS is what it’s like dating in MIAMI smh (shaking my head). I gotta move somewhere else, these girls are ENTITLED.”

The clip, which appears to have been recorded without the woman realising, shows her asking: “Why are we splitting the bill?”

He goes on to explain “it’s our first date, so I thought we should”, before the video cuts to him driving her home.

“I can’t believe you made us split the bill,” the unnamed woman can be heard stating in the car.

Water Boy explained she ordered food that he “didn’t even touch” before asking for an explanation as to “why” he should cover her meal.

“Okay. But you asked me out,” she states.

“Alright, I’ll just take you home,” the single man said.

The pair then share an “awkward” goodbye and the video – which has been viewed 6.4 million times – comes to an abrupt end with the man giving a smug look to the camera.

Reaction to the pair’s encounter came in hard and fast, with many believing the man was in the “wrong”.

“You ask her out bro, you pay,” one comment with 34,000 likes said.

“If you want to be friends only just tell her that,” another comment read.

And one simply stated: “Bruh, don’t ever date.”

Others noted that if the guy is not paying it’s like “two friends going out to eat”, as some praised the girl for being a “queen” at the way she handled the situation.

“She’s nice for even conversing with you after,” one argued.

“The fact that he tried to argue about the appetiser speaks volumes,” another mused.

After copping so much criticism, the single man shared more about his side of the story, claiming he believed women aren’t acting like women anymore – so why should men have to embrace the traditional gender roles assigned to them?

“Women are only feminists until it comes to certain things that they don’t want to do,” he said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“Everybody’s a feminist until it’s time to split the bill.”

In a follow up video, he also responded to the argument that because he asked the girl out, he should pay.

“I personally don’t agree. And to me, it’s a form of entitlement,” he said.

“It’s 2024. Women are very independent. [They often say], ‘I don’t need no man. I can take care of myself. I can do this, this, this.’ And so, OK, fine, fair. You don’t need no man. Whatever. So pay your half. Wouldn’t that make sense?”

He continued: “I’ve seen a lot of women mad about paying the bill. You guys don’t understand. This is not back in the day where women are the prize anymore.”

Understandably, his clap back went down like a lead balloon, with many deciding to “school” him on the reasons it’s never “50/50” between a man and a woman.

“You’re right that’s not how it is anymore. Now we have to take care of the cooking, cleaning, take care of kids AND work FT and pay half the bill,” one raged.

“When women earn the same as men, that’s when we’ll pay half,” another said.

According to the Government’s Gender Workplace Equality Agency (WGEA), the national gender pay gap in Australia sits at 14.1 per cent.

That means women bring home around $263.90 less weekly than men.

However there are many women who like to pay on a first date, with some stating the “sexual expectations” placed on them when a man foots the bill are “too much”.
