AFTER two years of falling in love on social media, Samuel Campbell and Haley Fox finally met face-to-face. Haley told Sam: ‘Close your eyes’.

AFTER two years of falling in love on social media, Samuel Campbell and Haley Fox finally met face-to-face.

Campbell, 26, had taken the bold move to move more than 3200km from his home in Adger, Alabama and live with his 24-year-old online lover at her family’s home in the town of Turner in Oregon, Statesman Journal reported.

According to a probable cause statement provided by Marion County Sheriff’s Office, when Campbell arrived at Fox’s home she took him outside and asked him to sit at a small metal table.

She then asked him to close his eyes.

“Detectives determined that while Mr Campbell had his eyes closed, Ms Fox walked behind him and struck him in the head, with a baseball bat,” Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

Fox allegedly slammed the metal bat into Campbell’s skull three times.

Campbell suffered a fractured skull and required nine staples to his head at Salem Hospital.

“Fox stated she played softball from grades 4-11 and knew how to hold a bat,” according to the court statement.

Fox also told police that she knew “it only took seven pounds of force to break a human being’s neck.”

Fox10tv reported that Fox told police that she had decided to hurt Campbell as she did not want to be his girlfriend.

Court documents state another woman — 26-year-old Jennifer Beaumont — allegedly appeared after the attack, and Campbell told police that he heard Fox and Beaumont talking about using duct tape to bind him and that he believed he was going to die.

Beaumont said that he told Fox and Beaumont that he would not say what had happened if they took him to hospital and they agreed.

Beaumont has been interviewed by police and has not yet been charged.

Fox has been charged with first degree assault — which carries a maximum 20 years in jail if found guilty — and released on $100,000 bail. She has not entered a plea and is due back in court on April 20.

Fox’s lawyer, Kevin Lafky, told Associated Press: “Suffice it to say we completely disagree with the characterisation of the facts that have been made by the sheriff’s office.”

A 2013 study published in the Journal of Communication showed that “while the public and the science community hold a pessimistic view towards long distance (LD) (dating), this research provides compelling support for the opposite side — long distance is not necessarily inferior to geographically close dating.”

The study stated that those in long-distance relationship were more open about sharing details with their partner as well as feeling closer to them. According to the paper, three million Americans are in long-distance relationships.
