Dalton Henshaw reveals why he took his wife’s last name
An Aussie man’s “straight forward” decision is a talking point years later and other men are the ones offended.
“Why did Dalton change his last name?”
It was a question that popped up in influencer Laura Henshaw’s recent Q&A on her Instagram page, which boasts over 300,000 followers.
The couple have been fielding that question since they tied the knot in 2021, and Dalton decided to take Laura’s last name.
When a woman takes a man’s last name, it is barely a conversation and it is almost still an assumption even in 2023, and yet Dalton’s name change is still being discussed years later and people are still begging for answers.
The idea that was just the natural conclusion they reached as a couple does not seem to be reason enough.
Dalton, while relaxing on the lounge with a glass of wine in his hand, said the core reason was that he’d never just assumed Laura would take his last name.
He said that ‘nothing was assumed” when the topic of names came up and he said it was always up for debate and it was a decision they reached together.
“It was always a conversation, and that conversation led to me taking Laura’s last name,” he explained.
“You didn’t have the expectation?” Laura clarified
Dalton said he didn’t because he believes assuming factors in life is “limiting” to what you are able to learn.
This isn’t the first time Dalton has addressed the fact that he took Laura’s last name; when the two first posted wedding photos, he made the announcement.
“You can still call me, Dalton, Dalt, Dolphin, whatever you like … I’m still the same me and always will be. Just going to sign off one chapter and start another with my beautiful, driven and inspirational wife by my side as, Mr Henshaw,” he wrote.
People were immediately thrown.
Sure there was plenty of celebrating over the modern move but there was also backlash.
Someone called him a “cuck”.
Another claimed it was just wasn’t “tradition” for a man to take a woman’s name, and another said it was “cringe”.
One said he’d “regret it” another claimed it was “pathetic” and it did become a talking point on the internet.
The conversation was laced with misogny.
There was so much interest that Dalton opened up about the decision further on the KIC Podcast and said that it was a “straightforward” decision.
“The decision was pretty straightforward, but to so many, it was a shock,” he said.
Dalton said he felt it made the most sense for him to take Henshaw’s name because of the empire she’d built.
“I also know how hard you’ve worked to achieve what you have in your career, and your name is so closely attached to being the CEO of Keep It Cleaner and the career you’ve carved out for yourself. It made a lot more sense for me to take your name,” he explained.
He added that the most important thing for him was that their future children would share the same last name as their parents.
Fast-forward to 2023, and Dalton still answers questions about taking his wife’s last name.
