Couple gets engaged during Taylor Swift concert

A couple at the centre of a viral proposal video at Taylor Swift’s Melbourne concert were originally scammed $400 in tickets.

Darwin couple Kesh and Jules, both 18, were surrounded by cheering fans when they got engaged during the song ‘Love Story’ during Swift’s first Melbourne show on Friday.

In a TikTok video, which has wracked up over 1.7 million views, Kesh, can be seen dropping to one knee as Swift belted out the lyrics “He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said, ‘Marry me, Juliet’”.

For proud Swiftie, Jules, the moment was a “dream come true”.

“I screamed and couldn’t believe it. I’ve shown (Kesh) reels of ‘Love Story’ proposals but I never thought it would be me,” Jules told news.com.au.

“A proposal like that is something you always dream of but never really dare to ask for, so the fact that she, a person who only really listens to Taylor for me, did that for me, was crazy.”

But the dream proposal – which Kesh had been planning “for a while” – originally hit a snag when the couple fell victim to a suspected scam.

“Getting to the concert itself was a battle,” Kesh told news.com.au.

“We got scammed $400 by a woman who made us pay through a third-party finance app. I trusted her since she swore on her kids’ lives.”

Kesh said she was also sent a photo of the woman’s licence and a “video of her saying ‘Hi’ to prove she wasn’t a scammer”.

However, after paying $400 for the tickets, the woman reportedly claimed there was a name change free.

Cautious, Kesh asked for her money back but the woman blocked her.

The couple later managed to secure tickets when they spotted a man selling H reserve tickets – originally priced at $65.90 – for $500 on Facebook Marketplace.

“He was already in a pending sale with someone else so I had to act fast and I bid $550 so I could secure the sale.”

The trouble was worth it, with the pair able to make it to the concert dressed in their ‘Fearless era’ inspired outfits.

“One of the first things I learnt about Jules was how much she loved Taylor Swift and how important her music was to her. To me, proposing at the concert felt like Taylor was passing her onto me and it was my turn to take care of her,” said Kesh.

The pair said it was “really heartwarming” to witness the reaction from those in the crowd.

“Everyone was so supportive and excited for us,” said Jules.

“As a queer couple who has faced homophobia, it was uplifting and incredible to see the amount of support and how many queer Swifties felt recognised and represented.”

Looking back, the couple said their own story felt a lot like ‘Love Story’.

“We knew we had feelings for each other but there was always factors that stopped us from getting together,” said Kesh.

The pair have sine been taken aback with the amount of support they have received, after a video of their proposal – taken by a fellow concertgoer was shared online.

“We were flooded with so many comments of people who felt seen and that was such an unbelievable feeling.”

Kesh and Jules were just one of the couples who got engaged over Swift’s three Melbourne shows, in what has become a popular concert trend.

In a separate video, a young man named Justin was seen popping the question to his fiancee after secretly buying a ticket and surprising her at the concert.

“My fiance doesn’t know that I’m here,” he told a fellow concertgoer in the video, which has amassed more than 10.4 million views.

“I’m really excited, there was so many things I had to go through but I’m here now.”

The video shows Justin, who dressed up as Romeo, snaking through the crowd before proposing to his fiancee as concertgoers scream around them.

Other videos online paint similar scenes, with crowds parting and fans cheering as couples pop the question to the hit song.

With Swift set to take to the stage at Sydney’s Accor Stadium on Friday, there’s no doubt more couples will likely have their own Love Stories play out among thousands of fans.

The global megastar will play four shows in Sydney before jetting to Singapore and playing a string of about four dozen shows across Europe.

Travis Kelce touched down in Australia to a dramatic reception as he prepares to reunite with his girlfriend Swift.

Just before 9am on Thursday, a Bombardier Global 6000 plane touched down at Sydney Airport following an overnight trip from Hawaii.
