Woman claiming to be Maddie McCann ‘very upset’ over failed DNA results

A Polish woman who claimed to be missing Madeleine McCann is said to be “very upset” about the results of DNA tests to prove her claim.

A Polish woman who claimed she was missing British girl Madeleine McCann has continued to make outlandish statements about the girl’s disappearance, saying DNA tests disproving her claim may have been false.

Julia Wendell, 21, went viral earlier this year after creating an Instagram account that claimed she was Madeleine, who vanished from a Portuguese holiday apartment in 2007.

Julia, who also sometimes uses the surname Faustyna, claimed she had similar facial features, suffered an abusive childhood and had started to question her parentage.

This week, however, DNA tests disproved her claim. One test, a 23andMe-style test that examined Julia’s heritage, found she was from Poland with some Lithuanian and Romanian heritage — rather than the British heritage of the McCanns.

Now, Julia has claimed those tests may have been invalid before finally accepting their results.

Fia Johansson, who has long been a spokesperson for Julia, said she brought the young girl back down to Earth after breaking to her the results of the tests.

“At first she didn’t want to believe the DNA results, she was saying ‘What if someone changed the results?’ but I told her, ‘Stop this now’,” Dr Johansson told The Sun.

“I can understand as a psychologist why she didn’t want to believe her mother is her real mother.

“But I told her she must stop this fixation now that she is Madeleine McCann and accept the result of the DNA test and start to move on with her life.”

Dr Johannson said Julia was “very upset” about the results after earlier confirming the news via her Instagram page.

“Although it is impossible to tell for sure without the parent’s DNA results on either side, the test results speak to the origins of Julia’s root,” she wrote.

“The test results show that she is 100 per cent of Polish heart.”

Dr Johannson picked up Julia’s case and flew her from Poland to Los Angeles after she started receiving death threats and vile messages from online trolls.

Dr Johansson arranged for Julia to give samples in the US for detailed DNA tests — including a DNA test similar to a 23andMe test, which established she is not Madeleine.

Julia’s family – who are understood to have refused to take a DNA test to confirm Julia’s identity – have attributed her claims to poor mental health and a lifelong desire to be in the public eye.

A spokesman for Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann also responded to the results, saying: “There isn’t anything to report at this time. If and when there is, it will come from The Metropolitan Police.”

Julia is also facing a nervous wait for the results of further health tests as doctors fear she may have leukaemia, Dr Johansson — with Julia’s permission — revealed to The Sun.

She said: “Her health is very poor she has bad asthma and she suffers lots of pain in her bones.

“She is booked in for a CT and MRI scan because of the pain in her bones.

“Her blood work is also abnormal so my doctor here in the US is investigating whether she could have leukaemia so we are awaiting the results of that.

“And if she needs any treatment we will make sure she gets that.”
