Woman calls 911 and pretends to call for pizza to escape abuse
THE dispatcher on the phone thought this woman’s call was just a silly prank. But it turned out to be a clever cry for help to escape a boyfriend’s abuse.
A WOMAN fooled her abusive boyfriend by pretending to call for pizza when she actually dialled the police for help.
The woman, who had been beaten by her partner, picked up the phone and pretended to order fast food when in fact she dialled 911.
But the man on the end of the receiving end of the call, at first thought it was a silly prank.
Recalling the call, Keith Weisinger, who worked as a police dispatcher between 2004—06, said the call remained one of the most memorable he ever took.
Revealing the incident on Reddit, he admitted the call started out as very dumb, but as he found out was quite serious.
The unidentified caller asks for a pizza, but as he talks to her he questions why she’s calling, Weisinger realises it’s very real and urgent.
Recounting the conversation, below, he said he realised just how clever the woman was.
“911, where is you emergency?”
“123 Main St.”
“OK, what’s going on there?”
“I’d like to order a pizza for delivery.” (oh great, another prank call).
“Ma’am, you’ve reached 911”
“Yeah, I know. Can I have a large with half pepperoni, half mushroom and peppers?”
“Ummm…. I’m sorry, you know you’ve called 911 right?”
“Yeah, do you know how long it will be?”
“OK, Ma’am, is everything OK over there? do you have an emergency?”
“Yes, I do.”
“..And you can’t talk about it because there’s someone in the room with you?” (moment of realisation)
“Yes, that’s correct. Do you know how long it will be?”
“I have an officer about a mile from your location. Are there any weapons in your house?”
“Nope.”
“Can you stay on the phone with me?”
“Nope. See you soon, thanks”
Weisinger said as he dispatched the call, he checked the history of the address and noticed it had domestic violence-related incidents in the past.
“The officer arrives and finds a couple, female was kind of banged up, and boyfriend was drunk.,” his post reveals.
“Officer arrests him after she explains that the boyfriend had been beating her for a while. I thought she was pretty clever to use that trick. Definitely one of the most memorable calls.”
Weisinger who is now an environmental lawyer with the United States Environmental Protection Agency, told Buzzfeed News he was working the graveyard shift and remembers getting the call close to midnight.
He said the woman seemed calm at first but gave short, hurried answers.
He added while police were able to respond to help quickly, he never found out what happened to her after the call took place.
