‘Why do I even try?’: Gen Zer floored by phone call

A young Aussie has revealed the common act that left her questioning “why do I even try?” exposing what Gen Zers can’t stand.

Generation Z might always be on their phones, but that doesn’t mean they want to do anything drastic like answer phone calls.

Maddie Shaw, 24, was recently left flustered when she went to check if she could get a better car insurance deal.

The 24-year-old filled out her details online, searching for a cheaper quote from a competitor, and was left stunned by what happened next.

“I just wanted to see if there was any better deals out there,” she explained.

Ms Shaw assumed that after giving out her details she’d be emailed a car insurance quote, but something much more confronting happened.

She took to social media to share the grim news that the insurance company cold-called her instead of sharing the quote with her online.

“They call you with the quote! So now I have a voice message from this lady,” she shared.

It doesn’t end there, either.

“She texted me and told me she was going to call me back in 15 minutes. I don’t do phone calls. That is why I was doing an online quote,” she vented.

“I just wish I never did that and now I’m just going to stay with my normal one and forget this ever happened.”

Ms Shaw found the whole experience so alarming that she captioned the TikTok, “Why do I even try?”

The 24-year-old told news.com.au that she’s not a fan of phone calls and is often not “in the mood” to answer her phone.

“I have always hated phone calls, even within a workplace, to people I don’t know or if I don’t have any idea of the context of the call,” she said.

The Gen Zer said companies should catch up because most young people don’t want to answer phone calls.

“I feel like some companies, like you, definitely need to realise that they’re going to lose younger customers by forcing phone calls upon them, and we’re the most expensive when it comes to car insurance, so that’s honestly so silly,” she said.

“I understand the need for phone calls sometimes but when they’re not essential. I’d rather not.”

Ms Shaw said she hasn’t ruled out talking on the phone altogether, and she’ll speak to her family, close friends and boyfriend on the phone because they aren’t “anxiety-inducing calls.”

The 24-year-old prefers online bookings because she doesn’t have to speak with anyone.

“It is a lifesaver, much more straightforward than going back and forth with someone on the phone. I did have to call someone last week to adjust the booking, which was an absolute mess, so I definitely love online booking for everything and anything,” she said.

Ms Shaw’s rant struck a chord with her fellow Gen Zers, who were happy to share how much they also hated phone calls.

One wrote, “Why do they do this? I have so many missed calls for this exact reason.”

“I was having a cheeky look at 11:30pm, and they called two seconds later! I immediately blocked them,” another shared.

“I hate companies that force you into phone calls. If I wanted to talk on the phone, I’d call. Leave me alone to sort things out online in my own time,” someone else shared.

“This is why I always put the wrong phone number, but the correct email. Don’t need that social interaction. Thank you,” one advised.
