A JAPANESE pop star is in a critical condition in hospital after she was repeatedly stabbed in the neck and chest by an obsessive fan.

Mayu Tomita has been left in a coma after the man “ambushed” her before an event in Tokyo, according to The Mirror.

Police found a three-inch folding knife at the scene on Saturday where the star was due to give a concert later that evening.

Tomohiro Iwazaki, 27, has since confessed to stabbing.

It’s believed he attacked her because she returned a gift he sent her.

The singer had reportedly complained to police about the fan last month.

“I lost my temper and stabbed her many times because she didn’t clearly answer,” Iwazaki said.

He also sent her a number of threatening messages before the attack.

“I will never forget that I was looked down upon by you,” one read.

Police now plan to charge Iwazaki on suspicion of attempted murder, the Japan Times added.

It’s not the first time that an attack on a female Japanese musician has rocked the Asian music scene.

In 2014, girl group AKB48 were attacked by a man wielding a saw at one of the group’s meet-and-greet events.

Tomita had been working as a pop star and actor while completing her studies.
