A 23-year-old woman has given birth in a Kyiv subway station being used as a bomb shelter as Russian air raids pummelled the capital city.

Police helped deliver baby Mia early on Friday in the underground station, where families were taking cover on the third day of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the country.

“Mia was born this night in stressful environment – bombing of Kyiv,” Ukrainian parliament member Hannah Hopko posted on Facebook with a close-up photo of the newborn wrapped in a blanket, New York Post reports.

Ms Hopko also posted about another newborn, a boy, born in the basement of a maternity ward, “in conditions, far from those who deserve a new life”.

Another member of parliament called for action.

“The Blitz of London 1940 is being repeated by Russia in Ukraine in 2022,” tweeted Anastasia Radina, who heads the body’s anti-corruption committee, with a photo of women tending to the new mum as she holds the baby boy.

And in another underground maternity ward near the Gostomei Airfield, a woman also gave birth to a baby girl.

Ivan Korol, the father of the unnamed infant, shared a photo of himself cradling his new bundle of joy.

“Last night under the roar in Gostomei, my wife gave birth to me a daughter, like a star in the dark in such a difficult time!” Mr Korol, whose page said he works for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the city, wrote on Friday.

“When Putin kills Ukrainians, we appeal to mothers in Russia and Belarus to protest against Russia war in Ukraine,” he said.
