Young Aussie reveals ‘ridiculous’ reason she was heckled

A young woman who was just out enjoying the sunshine was left shocked after a random person took offence to her outfit.

Adriana was going for a walk to enjoy some sunshine before heading to lunch when she was heckled by a stranger

The 31-year-old, who lives in Melbourne, was wearing a floral dress, not an outfit she even considered remotely provocative, when an older woman yelled out, “Oh, put them away,” referring to her breasts.

The random insult threw her for a second because it came from no where. She hadn’t even exchanged a “hello” with the stranger.

“For a split second, I questioned my choice of outfit. I left the house thinking I looked cutesy and demure,” she told news.com.au.

Adriana found the comment baffling because, if anything, she thought she was dressed more on the conservative side and didn’t see any problem with her outfit.

“80 per cent of my body down to my ankles was covered with fabric. But I kept my head held high and just kept going about my day,” she said.

The Millennial posted a TikTok about the encounter, amassed over 70,000 views, and wrote: “A plunging neckline is the least of society’s problems right now.”

She also hit back at the catcaller and said, “Ma’am, we are in a recession. Everyone is miserable. I am doing a public service by looking this good.”

Jokes aside, Adriana said it was a “ridiculous” comment to hurl at a stranger, but she’s also gotten used to unwanted comments and stares.

“I’m 5’9, I have a large bone structure, and I’m voluptuous, so I stand out, and I’m used to being looked at and paying it no mind really,” she said.

The 31-year-old said that her body has been a point of conversation since she hit puberty which has been tough to navigate.

“It’s not just comments about my cleavage or my clothing, but my body in general. Most of the time these days it’s complimentary, even if a little vulgar, but it still happens from time to time that someone is unkind, though mostly that happens online, not in person,” she said.

Adriana thinks unwanted comments about her body stem from sexism more than anything else.

“I think it comes down to misogyny, entitlement and insecurity. Everyone has an opinion, but some people think they’re entitled to say theirs out loud or to post that comment and try to take confident women down a peg,” she said.

“This society has a massive problem with confident women and tall poppy syndrome. I think we are seeing a current rise in misogyny.”
