Word 26yo never wants to be ‘defined by’

The wife of a professional golfer, who stunned in a $600 dress during her recent Aussie trip, has weighed in on the whole ‘WAG’ debate.

WAG reveals why she loves Aussie brands

A beauty and fashion content creator married to a professional golfer has weighed in on the popular phrase ‘WAG’ and why she doesn’t “want to be defined” by her relationship with a sports star.

Kim Wolff, who is married to pro golfer Matthew Wolff, has built an empire in her own right. The pair met while they were both studying at Oklahoma State college. At the time, she was using social media on a “personal level”.

The 26-year-old told news.com.au that at school, she was “career driven” and graduated with a degree in economics and a minor in finance.

“I got a job in financial operations straight out of school and I worked for several months on that. I couldn’t see myself doing it long term, and it’s one of those jobs you really have to pour into,” she said.

“I took a little time off — I’d graduated early so it allowed me to do that. And, within that time where I was just trying to give myself a break I got a little bored and started posting on social media.

“Within three months, I had over 100,000 followers on TikTok. It happened very quickly, just a string of viral moments that I wasn’t expecting. I decided I wanted to capitalise on it.”

Now, Kim has close to half a million followers and more than 40 million people have liked her TikTok content.

Which is why, when asked about being referred to as a WAG — which stands for wives and girlfriends of professional athletes, Kim is quick to say she doesn’t want that term to define her.

“I don’t know. I don’t want that to be my only [descriptor]. It’s like that comma 10 other things. I don’t want that to be the only thing people think when they think of me — in the same way that nobody would want to be defined by their relationship,” she said.

“It’s definitely a big part of who I am, my life and my lifestyle. But, I’m careful around it because I don’t want that to be the only thing that I’ve got.”

Speaking further about her budding social media platform, Kim said as the PR packages and brand deals started to roll in, she was able to negotiate her own contracts thanks to her background in economics and finance. However, she said because it was such a new industry there was a lot of trial and error when it came to negotiating a monetary figure.

Two years in, she started working with a management company.

The US influencer said the sudden social media attention was a bit “odd” at first, particularly given she had no idea what her content would be about.

“One of my first moments was a video like a closet tour, almost. And so, I wondered if I needed to stick with that and so I started to show laundry stuff,” she said.

“But it was when I started to do the makeup videos was really when it was viral moment after viral moment.”

It’s something Kim has stuck with. Her content centres around beauty and fashion, with food and travel sprinkled in.

Another “surreal” moment that came about because both Kim and Matthew are public figures was having her wedding featured in PEOPLE magazine in December.

The wedding featured 130 people at the W South Beach Hotel in Miami.

The 26-year-old said she loved doing the mag feature, as it was just as much as she wanted to share of the day, saying she isn’t the type of person to put every detail of her wedding on social media.

“I think in the beginning I was very cautious about that line of what I wanted to share and what I wanted to post because I didn’t want my following to necessarily be reliant on what he’s doing because we weren’t engaged at the time,” she said.

“We had been together for a while, and I knew I wanted to get married but it wasn’t something I was going to let my whole career ride on.

“Not only that, but because I have an entirely female following — that is absolutely precious to me. I did not want to invite the sports fans of it into that. And, naturally, with the type of content that I post, it’s girly, it doesn’t appeal to that side of people anyway.

“It was a natural separation, which has been really healthy for me and it’s allowed me to grow my own career, while still getting to share the fun parts of getting to travel and do all of the amazing golf tournaments.”

Kim recently joined her husband in Adelaide for the LIV Golf Adelaide tournament, and just like many WAGS before her — such as tennis player Taylor Fritz’s girlfriend Morgan Riddle — it was her “get ready with me” video that garnered attention.

The content creator wore a black $595 dress from Australian designer Shona Joy, which featured lace panel cut outs.

“I love Australian fashion. It is my favourite out of any part of the world. Every single time I see something online and click on it, it’s Australia,” Kim said.

“It encapsulates my style to a tee, I think it’s incredible and we just haven’t quite had brands that can do it quite like the Australian fashion does it — it’s top tier in my opinion, for my style personally.

The fashion influencer said on the day, she had a few dresses from different brands to choose from but it was the Shona Joy frock’s unique aspect, and combination of classy and sexy that drew her to it.

Kim joked that when she travels to Australia, she brings a spare completely empty suitcase to be able to be able to shop up a storm. She said she “learned her lesson” last year when she ended up having to buy a suitcase to cater to her new purchases.

And, it’s clear Kim isn’t talking a big game when it comes to Australian fashion and beauty. Her TikTok is filled with Mecca beauty hauls, and raving about brands such as Aussie sunscreen favourite Ultra Violette.
