Woolworths responds to shopper’s warning at self-serve checkouts

Woolworths has responded to one customer’s concern after groceries were scanned in at two different amounts at different registers.

Supermarket giant Woolworths has responded to a customer’s concern after she scanned in groceries at two different registers and got different totals.

The woman was paying $7.45 at the self-serve checkout at her local Woolworths when a technical error meant the transaction had to be moved to another register.

When going to pay the second time around, the cost was five cents more than the original total.

Others echoed similar experiences, with one person revealing a $20 difference in their shop.

But Woolworths was quick to respond to the woman’s concerns, after she posted a video online telling others to look out for it.

“We are committed to ensuring the accuracy of all trade measurement scales across our stores in line with strict regulations and test our checkout scales daily,” a Woolworths spokesperson told news.com.au.

“We strongly encourage this customer to reach out to our customer care team or the store directly, in order for us to investigate the items in the transaction and see what has caused the discrepancy.”

News.com.au understands there is daily testing, as well as weekly in-depth checks of all registers – both staffed and automated.

Any checkout that appears to be wrong is automatically closed.

The woman posted a video on social media sharing her experience of the price discrepancy, explaining she needed one that used cash and the staff member opened one that had been closed.

“I went and scanned all my groceries, it wasn’t much – just $7.45, I go to pay, push the pay now button and nothing happens,” she said.

“So I call over the man and explained and moved to the register next to me, no big deal.”

She said she scanned everything and the total was five cents more.

“A whole five cents, that isn’t a big deal to me at all, but how many people are unaware that this happens,” she said.

“I understand there is a calibration between machinery but you think they’d all be calibrated to the same weight scale at some point.

“There are probably swings and roundabouts of people paying more and others paying less over the course of the whole shop but how much is Woolies making from that?”

Commenters also expressed their frustration.

One said: “I despise the scanners! But even at the check-outs, I always question prices. Supermarkets getting richer, simply by ripping us off!”

Another said: “You know what … I never even realised.”

While a third said: “This has happened to me and the first machine I used froze at $190 so I moved to the next machine and it came to $170.”
