Owner defends savage dog attack after woman’s pet dachshund was mauled to death

The owner of a dog that mauled another dog to death has opened up about the attack, saying she was trying to save her son. Warning: Graphic.

The owner of a miniature staffy that mauled a dachshund to death has defended her dog, saying it was actually her family’s safety she feared for during the attack.

Claudia Harrison did not front media today but wrote a statement for her husband Paki to share about the horrific incident that unfolded in Pakenham yesterday morning.

Kashila Chintamunnee took to Facebook to share photos of the aftermath of the event that happened in a park southeast of Melbourne about 11am.

Her dog Coco was mauled to death by Mrs Harrison’s dog, leaving her “drenched in blood”.

Ms Chintamunnee called for help to track down the owner who she said walked away after the attack.

“She let go of her bloody dog and watched as it all happened,” she wrote on Facebook.

“I had to pull her dog off of mine and there are plenty of witnesses to back this up.”

But Mrs Harrison, who was taking her dog for a walk with her son when the incident unfolded, has defended her pet and explained why she left.

“Three dogs approached us from behind — two smaller dogs and one larger dog,” she said in a statement.

“The larger dog started to bark aggressively and I tried to get my son behind me to keep him safe and pull my dog away at the same time.

“My dog was on his lead with a harness. I looked around but there was no owner in sight and I was worried for my son.”

She said her dog was mauled to death and the owner walked away.

She said there was a nearby barbecue she put her son on to protect him.

“At this time the dogs were attacking my dog,” she said.

“I yelled and tried to signal for nearby help but there wasn’t anyone.

“At this stage I couldn’t get the dogs away from my dog and keep my son safe at the same time.”

She said she managed to wave down a car and the people who came running over happened to be the owners of the three dogs.

“I told them to get a bucket of water so the dogs would separate,” she said.

“It was too late by the time they came on to the scene.”

Mrs Harrison said Mrs Chintamunnee’s husband told her he let the dogs out of the garage.

“I was trying to get my son safe from the larger dog that was barking and circling,” she said.

“It is an unfortunate set of circumstances surrounding the event.”

She said the family had informed the owner of the dachshund their details but they had “not bothered” to contact them.

CCTV footage appears to show the incident unfold as Mrs Harrison explains it.

The footage, obtained by tendaily appears to show three dogs racing towards Mrs Harrison, her child and the staffy that was blamed for the mauling.

Yesterday Mrs Chintamunnee told the Cranbourne Leader her father opened their gate and Coco, aged four, ran outside to have a sniff of the other dog.

“He started mauling my dog,” Mrs Chintamunnee said.

“The dog had bitten too deep into Coco’s main vessel as he had lost that much blood – I was drenched in his blood that’s how much there was.”

Mrs Chintamunnee rushed to two nearby vets that were closed and Coco died a few minutes before she arrived at the third.

She reported the attack to police and council.

Police told news.com.au the incident was a matter for the council.

Ms Chintamunnee was left covered in blood.

Her beloved dachshund was only four.

Earlier Mrs Harrison told the Daily Mail the other dogs kept snapping at hers

“That’s when he got hold of one of them and I couldn’t get him off,” Ms Harrison said.

She said there had been no one in sight and she had tried to pry the dogs apart.

“They left the garage open but I was the bad guy and I was the one with my dog on the lead,” Ms Harrison said.

She said she left because she had to get her son home.

The owner of the other dog said she told Coco’s owners to get a bucket of water to separate them.

Comments on Ms Chintamunnee’s Facebook post that appear to be from Ms Harrison also defended the incident, saying it was Coco that attacked the staffy which had been the one on the lead.

Mr Harrison told the Cranbourne Leader his wife was “distraught” by the incident.
