A woman who was mauled to death by her own dog has been identified as 39-year-old Christine Kulis.

Ms Kulis was killed by her pitbull mastiff cross on Thursday at her home in Whyalla, about 400km northwest of Adelaide.

SA Police said the woman suffered serious injuries and was treated at the scene, but could not be revived.

Ms Kulis’ mum Meredith Howe from Port Augusta told the Daily Mail that she had pleaded with her daughter to have the dog put down.

“I told her she should have had that dog put down, but Christine didn’t want to,’ she said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner. Whyalla Council has since confirmed they have euthanised the dog after the incident.

Last month, a 54-year-old man was left fighting for life in hospital after he was mauled by his own dogs at his home in western Sydney.

The attack happened at an address on Kildare Road in Doonside about 11am on Thursday.

Officers with the Blacktown Police Area Command arrived on scene and were told the man had been attacked by several dogs.

A CareFlight helicopter was sent to the scene, with a specialist doctor and paramedics providing critical care to the man.

He sustained injuries to his head, chest and arm, CareFlight said in a statement.

In recent weeks, Australia Post has been calling on dog owners to secure their pets as new figures reveal 46 postal workers a week are being bitten or threatened by dogs.

In the past six months, about 1200 dog-related incidents have occurred nationwide, with numbers expected to climb as parcel deliveries surge during the busy Christmas season.
