The final text messages a man sent his wife before he killed her along with their children have been revealed in a new doco.

Chris Watts shocked the world when it emerged the “perfect” family man was actually the killer behind the murders of his pregnant wife and two daughters.

The 34-year-old from Colorado is currently serving five life sentences in Wisconsin Prison for the murder of his wife Shanann, 34 – who was carrying his unborn son, Nico at the time – and two daughters, Bella, four, and Celeste, three.

Watts initially denied any wrong doing, even going on live TV shortly after burying their bodies, begging anyone with information to come forward.

But investigators uncovered the father-of-two was actually the man behind the brutal slaying.

In the trailer of a new Netflix series – American Murder: The Family Next Door – Shanann appeared to be fighting for her marriage in the lead up to her death.

A sneak preview released September 29, shows text messages and letters Shanann sent her husband weeks before he killed her and their children.

“I miss and love you so much,” she shared in a text after learning she was expecting their third child together.

“I am still in shock we are having a little boy! I’m so excited and happy! Thank you for letting me hold you this morning, it felt good! Your letter is on the counter.”

In a letter Shanann wrote after spending time away from the family home, she said she “will do anything” for Watts, explaining the “last five weeks have been so hard”.

“I missed everything about you. I missed your morning breath, your touch, your lips against mine, I miss holding you. I missed smelling you in the sheets. I missed talking to you in person. I missed watching you laugh and play with the kids. I love seeing their smile with you. I missed seeing you naked and on top of me making love. OMG I missed having you around when I felt alone and upset. I just flat out missed the hell out of you.”.

“I can’t and won’t lose you without fighting for ‘us!’” she continued. “I will always fight for our marriage and you. This is the hardest thing I have ever gone through but you are worth it. Tell me what you need.”

On the day she was murdered, the documentary also revealed the couple exchanged text messages about groceries and dinner plans.

“What kind of vegetables do you want with dinner tonight?” Shanann texted Watts.

“Broccoli works,” he responded. “Green beans work, too.”

TROUBLED MARRIAGE

Watts had claimed had it not been for his mistress Nichol “Nikki” Kessinger, a fellow employee at his work, he would not have killed his family.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, author Cheryln Cadle, who is behind the book Letters From Christopher, said Watts was “mesmerised” by his mistress.

“She showed him respect that he didn’t feel like he’d ever been shown before,” Ms Cadle said.

Watts was so enamoured with Ms Kessinger when she told him she wanted to “give him his first son”, he allegedly tried to cause his wife to miscarry by giving her a strong painkiller.

“Christopher says he loved her like he has never loved anyone else before,” Ms Cadle added.

“At the same time, he loves Shanann, although he knows that she was not his soulmate and not the person he was supposed to be with.”

He told the author he felt “free” to be with Ms Kessinger and felt “no remorse” after the heinous crime.

“The darkness inside of me had won, it was still in me, though, I thought maybe permanently. I felt evil, swallowed up by this thing inside of me. I felt like I could kill anything and be justified for doing it,” Watts said.

The affair unfolded as Shanann and the girls spent several weeks away from Watts over the summer visiting Shanann’s family in North Carolina – a period during which Shanann continuously reached out to him in hopes of repairing their struggling marriage, according to documents obtained by People and released by the Weld County, Colorado, District Attorney’s Office.

Ms Kessinger spoke about the case for the first time in an interview with The Denver Post on November 15 where she claimed the triple-murderer was a liar.

She said she was tricked into believing Watts was a loving father, finalising a divorce and she had no idea his wife was 15-weeks pregnant.

“He lied about everything,” Ms Kessinger, 30, told the publication.

Watts proclaimed himself a “servant of God,” People reported, writing in a letter to his mother in June 2019, “I’m still a Dad! I’m still a son! No matter what. Now, I can add servant of God to that mix!”

The texts revealed in American Murder show that Shanann had no idea that her husband would soon kill her.

“Finally on plane and about to take off,” she wrote in her last text to Watts. “Thank God! Prayers for a safe flight. Love you!” Watts did not respond.

Watts strangled his wife Shanann before burying her body in a shallow grave on a remote oil field that was owned by his employer at the time.

He then dumped the bodies of his two daughters in an oil tank.

The Netflix documentary American Murder: The Family Next Door begins streaming September 30.
