Why you shouldn’t try the TikTok self-serve coin hack

A TikTok video which has been viewed almost a million times has caused a stir online with Woolies staff begging customers not to do it.

Viral Woolies checkout hack

A self-service hack has gone viral online, but supermarket chains have warned against it.

In the TikTok video, which has been viewed almost a million times, a Woolworths customer reveals a trick to speed up the check-out process.

She points out that machines have a coin slot flap that can be lifted up with a secret chute allowing shoppers to dump multiple coins at once, instead of one-by-one.

“Oi Aussies, did you know that at Woolworths you can pull this up to insert your coins when you have too many?” she wrote on the video.

However, the coin deposit sections on self-serve checkouts aren’t intended for use by customers and Woolies has advised that by lifting the cap, it can risk jamming the machines if too many coins are inserted at a time.

Hundreds of TikTok users have since responded with many “shook” by the hack, while others begged not to do it.

“Wait I did not know that at all – I wanna try that now,” one person wrote.

“OMG, I’m trying this,” said another.

But many Woolies staff hit back saying it jams the machines and is a “pain in the butt for us and the customers”.

“Noooo don’t do this, the machine will jam then we gotta fix it,” one staffer wrote.

“You’ll end up waiting longer … great way to jam the coin slot they have to individually go on a belt to be sorted so the machine knows what’s been put in,” another added.

Others pointed out that the same can be done at Coles, however it’s not advised.

“The purpose of the coin flap is to prevent debris, food and other small objects from getting into the machine which could cause jams,” a Coles spokesperson told news.com.au.

At Coles, regardless of whether you’ve used the single slot cover or lifted the flap, the coins will be counted one at a time.

“However, we do not encourage customers to put an excess amount of coins, i.e. piggy bank full of coins.”
