‘Why do they all have it?’: Viral phenomenon has 15yo boys in a grip
Every 15 years, teen boys will become obsessed with something, resulting in them all “looking the exact same”. Here’s why.
A viral video showing a group of teenage boys has revealed something many parents already knew: all 15-year-olds seemingly look the same.
The clip, which shows a group of 10 lads playing a computer game together, has garnered huge attention over the haircut they all have.
From behind, the boys are practically indistinguishable, with their matching brown locks that are longer at the top but fade down into a shorter style at the back.
But while the younger generation are clearly very clued into the trend, the video – which has amassed 18 million views since it was posted last week – has proven that older people have no idea what it is.

“What is the actual name of this hair style and why do they all have it?” text written across the footage asked.
Jaye Edwards, an Australian celebrity hair stylist, has come to the rescue, solving the conundrum once and for all.
“The trending haircut is a blowout taper,” he told news.com.au.
“This textured fringe is where the hair at the front is left longer, choppy, and styled forward, paired with a clean low taper fade.
“The reason it’s so popular is because it suits most hair types.”
Edwards, the owner of six EdwardsAndCo salons located in NSW, VIC and Queensland, stressed that while trends come in and out of fashion, “men are more likely to choose a safe style” such as this.
“Hair trends move so quickly, last year was the year of the mullet, and now it’s all about the textured fringe,” he explained.
“We’ve seen a move away from buzzcuts and fades toward haircuts with more shape, intention, and individuality.
“But the classic fade or short back and sides has become the comfortable default, today’s looks play more with silhouette and how a cut flatters the face.”
Edwards added that social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have been a huge influence too.
“Variations of the blowout taper are everywhere, with more and more people adapting the trend.
“It’s interesting seeing comments about how this particular cut looks like Princess Diana’s hair, or noting its similarities to a 80s tousled pixie cut.”
Edwards isn’t the only hair expert who has described the blowout taper as “one of the most viral hair trends right now”, with videos showing off the style racking up millions of views.
Reaction to the popular style has come in thick and fast, with more than 30,000 people leaving comments, including one that read: “Tell me you’re a 15-year-old boy without telling me.”
“The way teenagers always get the exact same haircut (one for each generation) is honestly such a fascinating social phenomenon to me,” said someone else.
As another agreed: “Every generation has a cut, it comes around every 15 years or so.”

Others rated the look to previous trends.
“Better than the 2000s frosted tips,” claimed one.
“I call it broccoli hair,” shared another, while someone else mused: “My boyfriend calls this the Alpaca Fade.”
