Where to get the best deal on Christmas ham

With the festive season set to hit already stretched budgets, we can reveal where to find the best deal on Christmas ham.

Best tips for your Christmas ham

As the centrepiece of the festive table – and the item a snarky relative is most likely to comment on – it’s important to get the Christmas ham right.

But if the pains of hosting are being felt in your hip pocket, a price review has revealed where to find the best deals for the holiday staple, as well as which major retailers have hiked prices since last year.

According to grocery app Frugl, which catalogues deals across the major supermarkets, Aussie retail giant Woolworths has mostly kept the cost of ham steady since 2021, while Coles has upped prices across almost its entire range.

While the two chains have almost identical prices across home brands, costlier name brand varieties are where true deals are to be scored.

A half leg of home brand ham at both Coles and Woolies comes in at $8.50/kg – exactly the same price as last year. The prices of double or triple smoked varieties were also the same across the two retailers, at $12.50 and $14.50 respectively.

Those looking to just buy pre-sliced ham, however, ought to head to Woolworths, where a kilo from the deli comes in at $17.25, compared to Coles’ $23.

Beyond home brand, prices vary across products.

For Australian-owned Bertocchi, “authentic” boneless leg ham was 50 cents cheaper at Woolworths, at $21.50/kg. Meanwhile the triple-smoked variety was considerably cheaper, at $21.50/kg to Coles’ $33/kg.

Woolworths also reigned supreme for internationally owned brand Don, with both double smoked and honey leg hams coming in at $22 – 14 per cent cheaper than last Christmas – compared to Coles’ $27.60.

Prices across Primo and Tibaldi brands were the same at both supermarkets.
