US expat’s water boiling video baffles Aussies

The American man who now lives in Melbourne has gone viral after revealing how a common task is done in the United States.

Boiling water for a cup of tea or coffee is such a universal habit.

But depending on if you’re in the United States or Australia, your method of heating up water will be drastically different.

In many parts of the United States electric kettles aren’t available and water is instead boiled in a saucepan or stovetop kettle.

American TikTok star @amfoskey, who now lives in Melbourne, shared a video showing how he would boil water in a saucepan when he was still living in the US.

He then cuts to how he would boil water in Australia, revealing all he needed to do was flip the switch on his electric kettle.

@amfoskey’s video has since been viewed more than 85,000 times, with Aussies baffled to find out some Americans used saucepans instead of electric kettles to heat water.

“What! America doesn’t have kettles!? Did they forget? Or … what??” one person wrote.

“I could not imagine having no kettle,” another commented.

Other said they had been shocked to find out they weren't common in the United States, with one commenter writing: “I remember struggling to make a tea in the USA using the coffee maker, called downstairs for a kettle I got silence.”

“This blew my mind when I went to college,” another said.

In America electric kettles aren’t common because the lower voltage levels found in many homes means they aren’t able to be used.

In the United States most homes only have a voltage of 100-127, while other countries such as Australia houses have voltages of 220 to 240 volts, Business Insider previously reported.

Last year Sophie Monk shared her shock at discovering electric kettles weren’t a thing in the United States.

The Love Island host lived in America for 10 years before returning to Australia in 2015, recalling the moment she discovered the weren’t widely used there.

“I was looking for a kettle, and they’re like (imitates a US accent), ‘Kettle?’” They don’t know what a kettle is!’ she told Yahoo Lifestyle Australia.

“They don’t use them. They must heat water up on their stove. Yeah, no one has a kettle, which is crazy.”
