US expat says supermarkets inside malls in Australia ‘makes sense’
An American expat living in Melbourne has revealed he loves a “convenient” detail he’s spotted with Australian supermarkets.
Who knew grabbing your groceries and being able to stroll into Kmart with your trolley was something uniquely Australian?
According to an expat living in Melbourne, having supermarkets in a shopping mall is one of the many things he didn’t know about Australia before he moved Down Under.
Georgia-born Adam Foskey has earned a loyal following on TikTok listing the cultural differences he’s uncovered since moving from the US to Victoria.
But while many of his finds are “confusing” – he said having grocery stores and pharmacies in shopping malls was a “convenient” detail he is happy to embrace.

In his latest video, Adam said he had “never heard” of being able to get your necessities in “one go” but said it “makes sense” and was something he could “get behind”.
Adam also said the word “lollies” for gummy sweets confused him, stating it was something he would associate with a hard lollipop not chewy sweets.
In the comments, Australians tried to explain further, with no luck.
“All ‘sweets’ are lollies, except a lollipop (because it’s on a stick) and chocolate,” a follower wrote, to which Adam replied: “Now y’all are really confusing me.”
Other things Adam revealed he found different here in his latest video included the school years, which were called “grades” in the US, and the Aussie use of the word “rego” instead of registration.
He’s not the first expat to have noticed a difference in our shopping malls, with a recent video revealing many were “blown away” that Australian trolleys have a safety feature that stops them “flying away”.
This was explained by NZ TikToker @pnuks, who explained this mean the trolleys could be used on travelators in shopping malls, revealing the safety function was operated automatically due to the special wheels that lock into place.
“Travelators are flat but they also have grooves,” he said in his viral TikTok video.
“So if we’re shopping and we want to go from this level to bottom level, and we have our wheels designed like this, they stick in the grooves so you don’t have to worry about it flying away.”
