‘Trolls say I’m destroying women’s liberation because I cook all my hubby’s meals’

A Melbourne wife has hit back at bullies who call her a “1950s housewife” because she cooks her husband three meals a day.

Women’s liberation has come a long way in the last century.

Wives and mothers in most parts of the world are no longer expected to stay at home looking after their husbands and children, but instead are encouraged to pursue whatever goals they desire.

With these new freedoms, we now have the choice to do just about anything we want to do.

But what happens when women want to tap into some of those more traditional roles?

For Sonali Arora, cooking all of her husband’s meals is what brings her the most joy throughout the day.

The newly married 26-year-old says food is her “love language” and ensuring her partner Nipun is well-nourished makes her happy.

But after sharing her daily routine on TikTok, the cyber security worker was hit with cruel backlash from trolls who called her a “1950s housewife” – with some even saying she is “destroying” women’s liberation.

“Food is my love language, and nothing makes me happier than looking after my man” the Melbourne wife said.

“I make my husband three meals a day, and will pack him a lunch box to take to work.

“I’ve always enjoyed cooking, so sharing this passion online just made sense.

“But instantly, I was hit with so much hate about making my husband’s meals. People were saying I was a 1950s housewife, and that I was destroying feminism and women’s lib.

“I ws shocked. I am a successful and educated young woman, I love my career and I’m very independent.

“But I also love cooking for my husband, and some people seem to think that these two parts of me cannot coexist.”

Sonali, who tied the knot with Nipun, 28, back in January this year, said she began cooking all of her husband’s meals both of out pure enjoyment and also to ensure he was eating well.

With Nipun working long hours in his role as a company director, Sonali explained that he would often either forget to eat, or was struggling to eat healthy, fresh meals.

As she works from home in her role, Sonali said it just made sense for her to prepare her partner’s meals at the same time as she cooked for herself.

“I’ve always loved food. It makes me so excited to try new recipes and taste new flavours” she said.

“Nothing makes me happier than seeing the contented look on my husband’s face when he loves what I’ve made.

“People just assume that i’m being oppressed, or that i’m behind the times, but in reality my husband jokes that I’m the boss in our relationship.

“They think he is forcing me to do this or is some kind of misogynist, but he is not like that at all. He is the sweetest, most caring man in the world who lets me be whoever I want to be.

“He never asked me to do any of this for him. I want to do it because I love him and it makes me happy.”

Sonali shares what she cooks for her husband in a day on her TikTok channel, to help inspire and motivate others who might be stuck in a cooking rut.

She said that while the majority of the feedback she receives is positive and supportive, she does deal with trolls who ‘assume the worst’ about her marriage.

“Is he two years old?” one person commented.

“He should just make his own lunch!”

“Let him make his own meals, he’s not a child” another said.

“Who is making your lunch?”

Despite the negative comments, Sonali said she wouldn’t have it any other way and added her husband does plenty of other things around the house – including often washing her dishes.

“I don’t really understand why people have an issue with it” she said.

“It’s my life, it makes me happy. It shouuldn’t be a problem.

“Making my husband’s meals isn’t pushing back the clock on women’s liberation, and I am in no way a ‘1950s’ housewife as some like to say.

“For me, it’s just a small thing to show my husband how much I love and care for him.

“It’s the little things that help keep the spark alive in a marriage.”
