Should we change the date of Australia Day? Have your say

Australians’ attitudes towards changing the date of Australia Day are evolving and more people are willing to consider a different day. Have your say.

Australia Day: If not January 26, then when?

Views around changing the date of Australia Day appear to be shifting with a decline in people celebrating January 26 and more support for change.

The debate over whether Australia Day is actually Invasion Day, as many Aboriginal people refer to it, has raged in the last few years.

The date January 26 is controversial as it marks the day the First Fleet sailed into Sydney Cove in 1788 formally declaring the land as British despite Indigenous peoples having lived on the land for centuries.

Last year surveys showed an increasing number of people are now treating January 26 as just another public holiday.

There is also increasing recognition around why the day is disrespectful to the country’s Aboriginal community, although not everyone agrees.
